The title reveal for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) rocked the world with news that the film would be part of a much larger story. Now, we have word of when the following installment is expected to release.

Producers/writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller discussed the upcoming sequel to the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse during an Entertainment Weekly Q&A. While discussing the decision to split the upcoming story into two films, the duo said, "Miles' story is an epic. We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise we realized it was two movies instead of one. We're working on them both as we speak. Part Two will be out sometime in 2023. We will sleep again in 2024."

In October, Sony Pictures added two release dates to its 2023 calendar--June 23, 2023 and Oct. 6, 2023--with one possibly being for the third Spider-Verse film. After a long period of no official news and only teases about what fans might expect, the bombshell announcement that we will be receiving not just one but two upcoming Spider-Verse movies came as a surprise. It was teased earlier in the week by producer Amy Pascal that the first look at the animated film would be arriving soon, with the footage releasing late on Dec. 4. Along with the title reveal, the footage showed Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy's reunion, before launching Miles into the Multiverse to have an altercation with Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel O'Hara.

The upcoming second film was originally set to release on April 8, 2022, before being pushed back to its current set release date of Oct. 7, 2022. With the new information from Lord and Miller, fans may not have to wait as long as the near four-year gap between Into the Spider-Verse and its subsequent installment. However, the inclusion that the two "will sleep again in 2024" implies that there are no official plans beyond a Part One and Part Two for now, or at least that it will be some time before a possible fourth installment.

Lord and Miller have played coy with Spider-Verse news before. In July 2020, the two teased on Twitter that a major Spider-Man character, Cindy Moon aka Silk, might be joining the upcoming epic. An official synopsis for the film released at the same time as the new footage, confirming that a "new team of Spider-People" are along the way to face off against a new villain, teased to be "more powerful than anything they have ever encountered."

Voice actors Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld will be returning as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy respectively, with Oscar Isaac reprising his role as Spider-Man 2099 from the first film's post-credit scene. Actor Issa Rae has reportedly been cast as Spider-Woman aka Jessica Drew, with Lord confirming earlier in the year that Takuya Yamashiro aka Japanese Spider-Man will also be a character in the film. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) is set to hit theaters on Oct. 7, 2022, with Part Two expected to release the following year.
