Although Spider-Man: Homecoming was mostly hailed as being a great Spider-Man offering, many fans were quick to note the "8 Years Later" title card was incorrect -- something Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo has now confirmed.

In a new interview for Avengers: Infinity War, which you can view below, Russo was asked what the time gap was between 2012's The Avengers and 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. "Oh, it was eight years, I believe," he says, as the interviewer notes that the timeline was very controversial among fans. "Yes, it was a very incorrect eight years." Unfortunately, those hoping the director would offer more of an explanation behind the oops will be disappointed, as the subject was quickly changed with the interviewer quickly moving onto the next question.

Interestingly enough, Russo's comments vary greatly from those of Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who was quick to note the controversy arose because many believe the films take place in the years they are released, which he insisted is not necessarily the case. Last year, Feige was asked about the timeline and the continuity issues it caused within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rather than confirm there was a mistake, Feige said the controversy made those involved with the MCU decide that they'll eventually get around to publishing an official timeline of all of the films. "All of that debate has made us go, 'Okay, at some point, I'm not sure exactly when, we're going to publish a timeline and see what it all is," he said. "It wasn't meant to flummox anybody exactly, and I'm not sure I'd do it again the same way, but it does all connect to where we placed it."

He continued to explain that, just because a film comes out in November 2017, that doesn't necessarily mean the film takes place in November 2017, and that outside of dates listed on newspaper clippings in the films, they're careful not to offer up dates for the films -- with the exception of films like Captain America: The First Avenger and the forthcoming Captain Marvel, of course.

As Marvel Studios and Sony prepare to ready the still untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, here's hoping they catch any possible timeline issues ahead of time.

Sony and Marvel Studios are set to team up for the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming later this summer, when filming is expected to begin — possibly overseas. The film will be directed by Jon Watts and will see Tom Holland return as the titular character. The untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is slated to hit theaters on July 5, 2019.
