One of the biggest surprises in the marketing leading up to the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home is the revelation that Mysterio, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, actually comes from an alternate Earth.
While doing press for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Gyllenhaal confirmed that his character and the Elemental villains attacking Europe in the movie come from the same Earth, with Mysterio following one such creature through an extradimensional rift in the space-time continuum.
"I follow one of the Elemental creatures through a rift in the space-time continuum and find myself on another Earth trying to fight this creature," explained Gyllenhaal. "What I don't know is that they sort of are expanding into different areas all over this Earth as they did on my Earth and I lost a lot on my Earth and sacrificed a lot fighting this one that led me to this Earth and find Nick Fury in the midst of battling this creature."
Trailers revealed that use of the Infinity Gauntlet by Thanos tore rifts between realities in the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, leading Mysterio and the Elementals to the prime MCU world where Mysterio joins forces with Nick Fury and Spider-Man to combat the new threat.
Opening July 2, director Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, JB Smoove, Jacob Batalon and Martin Starr, with Marisa Tomei and Jake Gyllenhaal.
