Even though Peter Parker wasn't feeling so good by the end of Avengers: Infinity War, he'll be back and swinging around as Spider-Man again next year. After his inevitable return in Avengers 4, Tom Holland's Spider-Man will suit up again a few months later for his second solo film, Spider-Man: Far From Home.

While Far From Home just wrapped principal photography last week, we already know a little bit about Spidey's next solo Marvel Cinematic Universe outing. The movie will see Peter take a class trip to Europe and encounter Mysterio, a special effects-themed villain portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal. Along with Zendaya's Michelle, Marisa Tomei's Aunt May and most of Peter's Spider-Man: Homecoming classmates, two of Marvel's top S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill, will also make an appearance.

And now, we have an idea of what Holland's next Spider-Man suit will look like in Far From Home. During his recent appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Holland officially debuted his new red and black Spider-Man costume on the late night talk show, which, like Marvel, is owned by Disney.

While several amateur photographers caught glimpses of the suit while the movie was filming in public, this marks our first Disney-sanctioned look at the suit. This isn't the first time Spidey's outfit has incorporated black, and his history with similar costumes could offer some hints about his status in the next Spider-Man movie.

A Superior Spider-Man?

While artists have emphasized the darker parts of Spider-Man's classic suit for decades, the first Superior Spider-Man suit is the clearest inspiration for Far From Home's suit. Spidey started wearing this red and black suit after Doctor Octopus put his brain in Spider-Man's body in Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos' Amazing Spider-Man #700. Overwhelmed by Peter's memories, Otto Octavius dedicated himself to becoming the best Spider-Man ever while living as Peter for a few years in Superior Spider-Man.

Unless Far From Home takes some drastic steps, it's tough to imagine any of that Doc Ock plot happening, but the movie could still cover similar thematic ground. When Otto's Peter was wearing that suit, he was a more severe, ruthlessly efficient Spider-Man. He didn't really crack jokes, but he cracked plenty of skulls.

By all accounts, none of the Avengers are going to have a good time in Avengers 4. After surviving whatever trauma that movie has in store for him, Holland's Spider-Man could easily take a more serious turn. If his history with Uncle Ben proves anything, it's that Spider-Man doesn't usually handle grief well. Shockingly, Far From Home will be Holland's fifth cinematic outing as Spider-Man, and his Peter could think that it's time to grow up a little bit.

The Spider-Man in Black

Of course, Spider-Man really started wearing black with the all-black symbiote costume that became the alien half of Venom. Despite Venom's blockbuster success, Holland's Parker probably won't meet that slobbering symbiote onscreen just yet. However, Spidey's Far From Home suit still borrows a few design elements from the symbiote suit, and set photos indicate that Holland may wear a similar all-black costume.

In comics, Spider-Man wore a cloth version of his black suit after he got rid of the symbiote. Among other reasons, he kept wearing this dark design since it was stealthier than his usual tights. In Far From Home, Spider-Man could be going for a similar, stealthy effect. Since super-spies Nick Fury and Maria Hill are in the movie, Holland's Spider-Man could be affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D. in some capacity. In the Marvel Ultimate Universe and the long-running cartoon Ultimate Spider-Man, Fury was one of Peter's main mentors, and this could introduce a version of that relationship.

Fury's presence could also involve Richard and Mary Parker, Peter's biological parents, who were secret agents in comics. In The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, Sony Pictures, which holds the rights to make Spider-Man movies, was very keen on emphasizing the espionage elements of Spider-Man's origins. With S.H.I.E.L.D. spies, an international setting and a stealthier suit, Far From Home could be set up to embrace Peter Parker's parents once again.

Historically, bad things happen when Spider-Man wears black. His black symbiote costume turned into one of his greatest foes, Venom. In J. M. DeMatteis and Mike Zeck's classic story "Kraven's Last Hunt," Spider-Man wore the black suit while he went through psychological torment at the hands of one of his classic foes. After Marvel's Civil War, he donned it again as he mourned during the "Back in Black" era, when a sniper's bullet almost killed Aunt May. Until the final post-credits scene rolls after Avengers 4, there's no telling what kind of mental state Peter will be in or who he might be mourning. Either way, Holland's Spider-Man could have some dark days ahead of him.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marisa Tomei, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders and Michael Keaton, is scheduled for release on July 5, 2019.
