Vulture reports Jackson will be joined by Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill in the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. The two were last seen together in the post-credits scene of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, where they — along with half of all life in the universe — turned to dust with a snap of Thanos’ fingers. Of course, Fury managed to first send a distress call to Captain Marvel, setting up his role opposite Brie Larson in the hero’s 2019 solo film.
It’s been theorized that Jackson’s Fury will play mentor to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in Far From Home, replacing Robert Downy Jr. as Tony Stark. That sort of relationship was explored in Marvel’s animated Ultimate Spider-Man, in which Fury offers Peter Parker, still fledgling hero, an opportunity to train alongside four other teen superheroes.
Of course, we’ll have to wait until Avengers 4 to learn how Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders, Peter Parker and countless others return from the dusty afterlife — and why it is that Tony Stark isn’t playing mentor any longer.
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. It is scheduled to be released on July 5, 2019.
