Jake Gyllenhaal recently admitted that Tom Holland helped him deal with anxiety on the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home.
"I was freaking out," the actor said on The Howard Stern Show. "It was a scene with [Samuel L.] Jackson, Tom…there were a number of actors in that scene...And I remember not being able to remember my lines."
Gyllenhaal, who portrayed Mysterio in the film, further described himself as a "wooden board." "And I went up to Tom Holland and was like, 'Dude, help me out,'" he continued. "He's like, 'It's all good, man. Just relax.' It was like he was me in so many situations. And I finally did. I just put a lot of pressure on [myself] because I love that world."
The actor also revealed that he put so much pressure on himself to deliver because he's obsessed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, explaining, "...I love that world, man. It's not me coming in as an actor going like, 'Oh, I've made 60 films...I know what I'm doing. It's me coming in every time being like, 'I love Spider-Man. I love this world. I want to kill it here.'"
When Stern pointed out the massive nature of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gyllenhaal recalled, "...Exactly, like, Sam Jackson's just rolling with it, throwing out improv, they're changing movies around him. And I'm just, like, I can't even barely get my line out."
Gyllenhaal's Quentin Beck/Mysterio was introduced in 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home as a former employee at Stark Industries who lost his job after Tony Stark rejected his life's work. After it was revealed that Mysterio was trying to get close to Spider-Man in order to access Stark technology, the foes faced off in London and Mysterio was defeated. The mid-credits scene revealed that Peter Parker was exposed as Spider-Man and framed for Beck's murder.
While it was recently confirmed in the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home that Alfred Molina will return as Doc Ock, it was previously suggested that Mysterio will have some sort of presence in the film. It's also rumored that Jamie Foxx may return Electro -- a role he played opposite Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). In related news, a VFX Artist Team recently claimed that leaked footage of Garfield on the No Way Home set is in fact real, despite Garfield's denial. Specifically, VFX artists at Corridor Crew suggested there were too many details in the clip for it to be a "deep fake."
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters Dec. 17.
