In order to make Mysterio's scheme work perfectly, the filmmakers behind Spider-Man: Far From Home had to look to the past -- all the way to the very first Marvel Studios film: Iron Man.
As those who have seen the film know, while the late hero's presence is felt throughout Far From Home, Tony Stark doesn't actually appear in the film. However, due to the importance of the armored Avenger to both Peter Parker's life and Mysterio's master plan, the sequel digs back into Marvel Cinematic Universe history in order to spin its story.
Mysterio's entire support system is built from other people who feel slighted by Stark and his company, including a number of characters who actually appeared in previous Marvel films. In the video below, we see how one in particular, William Ginter Riva, links all that way back to the first MCU movie.
Riva, played by Peter Billingsly, is the Stark Industries scientist who gets torn a new one by Obadiah Stane in Iron Man. In Far From Home, we learn he's also Mysterio's number one man, and in telling his story, the filmmakers re-created one of his major scenes in Iron Man, shooting it from a different angle in order to really focus on the moment the seeds were planted for Ginter to go so far as to betray Tony Stark's legacy.

Helmed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Far from Home stars Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, JB Smoove, Jacob Batalon and Martin Starr, with Marisa Tomei and Jake Gyllenhaal. The film is now available on Digital HD and arrives on Blu-ray and 4K UHD Oct. 1.
