Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up on the plot threads from Far From Home, which concluded with Mysterio outing Peter Parker's secret identity to the world. This leads Peter to Doctor Strange in an effort to put the eight-legged genie back in the proverbial bottle, but when the spell goes wrong, villains from across the multiverse enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper. This includes Alfred Molina's Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, Thomas Haden Church's Flint Marko/Sandman and Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn/Green Goblin from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and Rhys Ifans' Dr. Curt Conners/Lizard and Jamie Foxx's Max Dillon/Electro from Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man film series.

With so many threats from so many universes, rumor has it Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's respective Spider-Men will show up to lend Tom Holland's Spidey a hand. However, despite numerous reports and apparent leaks, neither Sony nor Marvel will confirm their involvement. Sony even went as far as to outright deny it in October 2020, saying, "Those rumoured castings are not confirmed."

Maguire, who hasn't acted in several years, has been noticeably silent amidst the rumors of his return, but Garfield has addressed it multiple times. So much, in fact, that he recently told fans he was done answering their No Way Home questions. "This is about this, this Spider-Man Photoshop thing that we talked about, [on] Jimmy Fallon," he said. "Listen, at this point, people just, like ... I'm done. Like, we'll find out when the movie comes out and we'll either be very disappointed, or we'll be very happy, or like, someone will say, 'I told you so.' And the other person was a bit, 'I told you so.' We'll all find out."

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters Dec. 17.
