Dan Slott recently concluded his decade-long run on Spider-Man comics by introducing the terrifying Green Goblin-Carnage hybrid, Red Goblin. Unsurprisingly, Red Goblin lived up to the hype -- as Spidey's goblin-themed baddies tend to do. Norman Osborn made it clear to Peter Parker that no-one in his life was safe, and delivered on that promise with the death of Flash Thompson. Of course, that's not the first person in Peter's life that Norman's taken. And it's far from the first time that a goblin-themed villain has nearly destroyed Spider-Man. That's why we decided to take a look at all of the goblins that Spider-Man and his allies have run up against and rank them from the least impactful to the most.

When Stan Lee and Steve Ditko introduced the Green Goblin in Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #14, they couldn't've known how many goblins would follow in Norman's wake. Peter's goblin-themed supervillains could comprise a rogues gallery of their own. In the 616-Marvel Universe alone, Peter's gone up against Green Goblins, Hobgoblins, Gray Goblins, Demogoblins, and more. They've been his best friends, his lovers, and his co-workers, as well as career criminals, mad scientists, and psychopaths. When you factor in alternate universes goblins and time-traveling goblins, there seem to be just as many of them as there are symbiotes. But it's not just their numbers that are frightening; the majority have posed a serious threat to Peter, often significantly changing the status quo whenever they crop up. Here are Spider-Man's 20 most impactful goblin-themed villains, ranked.

20 PROTO-GOBLIN

Nels van Adder, aka Proto-Goblin, was first and last seen in 1997's Spider-Man #1. The story was a re-envisioning of Peter's early days, which involved a new development in Norman Osborn's transformation into the first Green Goblin. Adder was a scientist under Osborn's employment, working on the creation of the Goblin Formula.

When the thought the Goblin Formula was finally complete, Adder used himself as a guinea pig, transforming himself into the monstrous Proto-Goblin. Captain Stacy and his brother tracked the Proto-Goblin to an OsCorp facility where they fought off the beast. The Prot0-Goblin was last seen being flung out a window and into a river down below.

19 NORMIE OSBORN (GREEN GOBLIN)

In the MC2 -- the alternate universe where Peter's daughter stars as Spider-Girl -- Harry's son, Normie Osborn, has grown up and embraced a stint as the Green Goblin. In fact, Normie's adoption of the Green Goblin identity was what propelled May Parker to take on the superhero life in the first place. After being easily defeated by Spider-Girl several times in a row, Normie finally gained the upper hand when he captured her.

However, Normie couldn't bring himself to finish the job. The moment catalyzed Normie's reformation as he forsook the goblin legacy and took control of his life. But it wouldn't be smooth-sailing for Normie. His association with the Order of Goblins would continue to haunt him.

18 MONSTER

Decades after the Leeds reveal, another one of Peter's friends was unwillingly turned into a goblin. Carlie Cooper had been a forensic specialist who'd dated Peter before his body was taken over by Doctor Octopus' consciousness. In Super Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #25, Carlie falls into the hands of Goblin Nation -- an army of goblin-themed baddies intent on destroying Doc Ock's Spider-Man.

Refusing to give the Goblins key information on Spider-Man, Carlie was injected with Goblin Formula, turning her into Monster. As Monster, Carlie carried out missions at the behest of Goblin Nation until one of Doc Ock's allies was able to reverse her condition.

17 NED LEEDS (HOBGOBLIN)

Ned Leeds unmasked as Hobgoblin in Marvel Comics

Oh poor Ned Leeds -- the Hobgoblin that never should've been. Leeds was a work friend of Peter Parker's at the daily bugle and the husband of a fellow reporter, Betty Brant. Leeds' normal life took a dark turn after he was assigned to investigate the Hobgoblin. Hobgoblin's trail led Leeds right into the goblin's trap.

Peter's friend was brainwashed until he believed himself to be the Hobgoblin so that he could do the real Hobgoblin's criminal deeds. Even after the truth had been revealed about Leeds, things didn't get any better. Still believing him to be the true Hobgoblin, the Foreigner ordered his offing.

16 GRAY GOBLIN

The Grey Goblin flies on his glider, holding Spider-Man's costume

In the "Sins Past" storyline, it was revealed that Norman Osborn and Gwen Stacy had had a brief relationship that resulted in two kids. The children, Gabriel and Sarah Stacy, were raised by Norman and developed at an accelerated rate due to Norman's goblin-modified genes. Thinking that Peter was his father and was responsible for Gwen's dirt nap, Gabriel injected himself with Goblin Formula, becoming the Gray Goblin.

The Gray Goblin hunted down Spider-Man in spite of his sister trying to convince him of the truth. In the final showdown between him and Spider-Man, the Gray Goblin's glider is shot by Sarah, causing Gabriel to crash and contract amnesia.

15 HOBGOBLIN 2211

As if Peter didn't have enough goblins to deal with from his era, a time-traveling Hobgoblin emerged in Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #8. This new Hobgoblin, armed with bombs that could erase her enemies from existence, arrived from the year 2211. It turns out that she was the daughter of her era's Spider-Man, convicted for unauthorized time-travel, among other crimes of the future.

Her conflict with the present Spider-Man inevitably brought Spider-Man 2211 into the fold. In their final showdown, Peter unintentionally erased Hobgoblin 2211 after he swung one of her bombs back at her, unaware of the bomb's power.

14 FURY THE GOBLIN QUEEN

Elan DeJunae, aka Fury the Goblin Queen, was a goblin extant in the alternate universe where May Parker (Peter's daughter) fights crime as Spider-Girl. Fury debuted in Spider-Girl (Vol. 1) #73, as the leader of the Order of Goblins -- an organization established by Norman Osborn in order to secure his legacy.

Elan, whose father had been an associate of Osborn's among the Order of Goblins, had been trained from birth by the Order and even betrothed to Normie Osborn when she was a baby. Although Normie would eventually walk away from the Order, Elan embraced her role as the incumbent Goblin Queen.

13 DEMOGOBLIN

Demogoblin in Spider-Man comics

Before he ever became Demogoblin, Jason Macendale Jr. was no stranger to throwing pumpkin bombs. Macendale kicked off his supervillain career under the alias Jack'O Lantern, and then Macendale became the second Hobgoblin. Despite his newly found power as Hobgoblin, Macendale was still consistently defeated by Spider-Man.

Thus, Macendale seized the opportunity to acquire more power when the Inferno event occurred and demons roamed the earth. Macendale met with N'Astirh who mutated him into a demon. As Demogoblin, Macendale now posed more of a threat to Spider-Man than ever before. However, Macendale gradually developed a split-personality. The former Hobgoblin became increasingly fed up with his demonic personality, leading to him expelling it from his body.

12 THE GOBLIN

In Spider-Verse Team-Up (Vol. 1) #2, an alternate reality where Peter Parker became a villain known as Goblin was explored. The story reveals a Peter Parker who went down a dark path following the unbreathing of Gwen Stacy at the hands of Green Goblin. Unlike in the 616-Marvel Universe, in this reality, Peter takes Norman Osborn's life and ditches his Spider-Man tights to become Goblin.

Eventually, the Inheritors targeted Goblin, as they did with every other Spider-Man in the multiverse. A Spider-Woman from a foreign dimension steps in to help him against his vampiric enemies. After realizing that beneath Spider-Woman's mask is another Gwen Stacy, Goblin redeems himself by sacrificing his life to protect her from the Inheritors.

11 TWO-FACED GOBLIN

Out of the DC vs. Marvel miniseries, emerged the short-lived Amalgamverse, featuring an array of characters that were combinations fo Marvel and DC characters. Among these amalgamated characters was a cross between Two-Face and Green Goblin -- Two-Faced Goblin. Two-Faced Goblin terrorized New Gotham City and squared off against Dark Claw (an amalgam of Wolverine and Batman).

Two-Faced Goblin led a trio of villains known as the terrible three, which also included Scarecrow (DC's and Marvel's Scarecrow) and Siliconman (Sandman and Plastic Man). Though he initially got away from Dark Claw, Tw0-Faced Goblin was ultimately done in by Speed Demon (Ghost Rider and the Flash).

10 MENACE

Lily Hollister, the friend of Peter and fiance of Harry Osborn, transformed into a goblin after bumping into some Goblin chemicals. Hollister raided one of Norman Osborn's weapon caches and set to manipulating New York as the villainous Menace. After a strong shoving match with Spider-Man, Menace was unmasked and sentenced to prison.

Norman bailed her out of prison and enlisted her in a plot to sacrifice Harry. Norman and Menace's plan was foiled by the webhead, but Menace would rear her head once again as an ally of Goblin Nation. The event concluded with the Goblin Serum finally being removed from Hollister's system, freeing her of the goblin's very not good influence.

9 RODERICK KINGSLEY (HOBGOBLIN)

Before he donned the first Hobgoblin costume, Roderick Kingsley was a not nice executive of a fashion design company. Kingsley employed increasingly unethical methods to beat out his competitor, to the point at which he begged Norman Osborn for the Goblin Formula to help him in his campaign. Roderick transformed into the Hobgoblin and began to make a name for himself in the criminal underworld.

Soon he caught the eye of the authorities and Spider-Man, motivating him to brainwash Ned Leeds to throw them off his trail. Kingsley was eventually outed as the Hobgoblin and sent to jail, although his vast network of criminal connections ensures that he always finds a way out.

8 DR. BART HAMILTON (GREEN GOBLIN)

Bart Hamilton as the Green Goblin shooting fire at Spider-Man

Dr. Bart Hamilton fantasies of becoming a criminal mastermind became a reality shortly after he met Harry Osborn. Harry came in as a patient of a psychiatrist, and, after being hypnotized by Hamilton, gave away everything there was to know about the Green Goblin and Spider-Man. Hamilton acquired the Goblin Formula and Harry's old equipment, determined to be the Goblin to finally dispose of the wall-crawler.

Hamilton came close to it too, nearly tossing an unconscious Spider-Man into an incinerator. Eventually, Harry's Green Goblin personal resurfaced, leading to a clash between him and his former psychiatrist. Harry prevailed, and Hamilton met his end in an explosion.

7 JASON MACENDALE (HOBGOBLIN)

Finding his career as the mercenary Jack'O Lantern to be getting stale, Jason Macendale Jr. was looking for a new criminal identity. Macendale stumbled upon the perfect opportunity after he happened upon the original Hobgoblin's gear. Macendale organized the putting down of Ned Leeds, who he believed to be the original Hobgoblin, allowing him to become the new Hobgoblin of New York's underworld.

As Hobgoblin, Macendale was once again overcome by Spider-Man, propelling him to seek more power as the Demogoblin. But even that Macendale couldn't be satisfied with, leading him to double down on his Hobgoblin persona. Things came full circle in Spider-Man: Hobgoblin Lives (Vol. 1) #1, when Roderick Kingsley returned, revealed himself to be the original Hobgoblin, and disposed of Macendale.

6 PHIL URICH (GOBLIN KING)

Phil Urich, the nephew of the renowned journalist, Ben Urich, emerged from his bath in Goblin Formula as the fifth Green Goblin -- albeit, the first heroic one. As the Green Goblin, Phil teamed up with the likes of Spider-Man and Daredevil to take on New York's supervillains. However, the Goblin Formula eventually overpowered Phil, leading to a psychotic break.

Phil took out the current Hobgoblin and replaced him as the formidable force in the criminal underworld. Phil's madness continued to escalate,  taking on the alias of Goblin Knight when Goblin Nation launched its attack on New York and recently becoming the new Goblin King.

5 ULTIMATE HOBGOBLIN

The Harry Osborn of the Ultimate Marvel Universe had the odds stacked against him. Traumatized by his father's transformation into the Green Goblin that left Harry's mom unbreathing, yet unwilling to renounce his love for his father, Harry soon turned his anger on Spider-Man. Harry finally found a way of venting his anger after he was exposed to his father's goblin serum.

Peter's friend transformed into the hulking Hobgoblin and proceeded to wreak havoc on New York. S.H.I.E.L.D. rushed to the scene and put the beast down. However, Harry survived, and the next time he transformed into the Hobgoblin, it was to protect S.H.I.E.L.D. from his very angry father.

4 HARRY OSBORN (GREEN GOBLIN)

Green Goblin Deodato

In the 616-Marvel Universe, Harry Osborn was destined to follow in his father's footsteps and become the Green Goblin. Addicted to things and obsessed with avenging his father being put in the ground, Harry descended into an increasingly unstable state. His obsession with Spider-Man eventually reached its breaking point, forcing him to become the second Green Goblin.

Harry launched a full-scale attack on Peter upon learning that he was Spider-Man. He took away Mary Jane, Aunt May, and Flash Thompson, in an attempt to lure Peter to his doom. Spider-Man defeated his old friend and sent him to a medical institution to get help for his various addictions.

3 RED GOBLIN

Red Goblin Alex Ross

Norman Osborn's deadly alliance with the Carnage symbiote led to the creation of one of the most dangerous goblins yet. After sending mercenaries to acquire the symbiote, Norman bonded with Carnage and injected himself with Goblin Formula, thus becoming Red Goblin. Norman's plan of action quickly fell into place after rediscovering the identity of Spider-Man.

As the Red Goblin, he launched an assault on Peter's loved ones. However, thanks to Spider-Man's many allies -- Miles Morales, Silk, Human Torch, etc. -- Peter's loved ones were protected. Tragically, Red Goblin wasn't subdued before he slew Peter's long-time friend, Flash Thompson. In retaliation, Spider-Man destroyed the Carnage symbiote, forever severing its connection to Norman.

2 ULTIMATE GREEN GOBLIN

Contracted by S.H.I.E.L.D. to work on the Super Soldier serum, the Ultimate MU's Norman Osborn never foresaw what would happen next. While working on the formula, his lab exploded, and out of the wreckage arose the monstrous Green Goblin. The Green Goblin wreaked havoc wherever he went, blowing up his home, and then causing panic at Peter's high school.

Peter repeatedly came into conflict with his flame-throwing foe, and their feud culminated in Spider-Man's final story. Green Goblin assembled the Ultimate Six and launched an all-out attack on Peter, concluding with the young hero's tragic state of unliving. But even that wasn't enough to satisfy the goblin and he soon set his sights on Peter's successor, Miles Morales.

1 NORMAN OSBORN (GREEN GOBLIN)

amazing-spider-man-green-goblin-header

Before Norman Osborn bonded with Carnage to become the Red Goblin, he consistently pushed Spider-Man to his limits as the Green Goblin. Norman delivered Peter's most significant loss early on in his career when he tossed Gwen Stacy off a bridge.

Although he appeared to have been ended shortly after, Norman rose again decades later and immediately eliminated Peter's clone, Ben Reilly. After he found out that Peter Parker had been displaced by Doc Ock, Norman seized his opportunity to conquer New York by organizing Goblin Nation. Luckily, Peter returned to his body in the nick of time to stop one of his oldest foes.
