Spider-Man has quit web-slinging several times. On a few occasions, Peter Parker has given up his spider-powers altogether. For a brief period in the '90s, Spider-Man relinquished his great power, although he retained his great sense of responsibility.

In the Amazing Spider-Man #340, by David Micheline and Erik Larsen, the wall-crawler was approached by the mysterious Doctor Turner. The doctor wanted to analyze Spider-Man's DNA, believing that the web-head's powers could do a great deal for humanity. Peter agreed, although when he stood under Turner's machine, he was doused with some dangerous rays which sapped a portion of his spider-powers. When Spider-Man fought a group of new villains, called the Femme Fatales, he nearly died when his spider-powers waned. Fearing for his safety, especially for the sake of his lonely Aunt May, Peter opted to remove his powers completely. Going back to Doctor Turner, Spider-Man stood under the machine, stripping him of his spider-powers.

Almost immediately afterward, The Tarantula heard how Spider-Man lost his powers, attacking a Manhattan block party. Nearby, Peter and Mary Jane were enjoying a picnic with Flash Thompson and Felicia Hardy. When Peter heard of The Tarantula's attack, his sense of responsibility kicked in. With no powers, Spider-Man attempted to stop The Tarantula. Peter barely managed to hold the villain off, saved by the timely intervention of Flash and The Black Cat.

Following this near-death experience, Peter tried returning to a normal life. Before long, however. the former web-slinger grew restless, angered at the sight of a married couple getting mugged. Peter helped the couple by throwing a brick at the muggers, but he still felt useless without his powers.

Meanwhile, Doctor Turner was revealed to be part of some mysterious plot. Indeed, the doctor hired The Scorpion to kill Spider-Man. In order to draw out the web-slinger, Mac Gargan kidnapped J. Jonah Jameson. Peter knew he couldn't rescue Jameson on his own, asking for help from Felicia.

The Black Cat had recently gained her own powers, including increased agility, reflexes, infrared vision, and her own claws. With Felicia's help, Peter rescued Jameson from The Scorpion. Afterward, however, Scorpion viciously attacked Spider-Man, who took a brutal beating from his foe. Only the presence of The Black Cat saved Peter's life. Hearing that Doctor Turner hired The Scorpion, Peter put a spider-tracer on Gargan to find out what he was scheming.

Together, Peter and Felicia tracked Scorpion to the Botanical Gardens, where he was meeting with Doctor Turner, accompanied by The Tarantula and the Femme Fatales. In truth, Turner had been The Chameleon all along. The device used to analyze Spider-Man's DNA was supplied by The Tinkerer, who believed it would mobilize the wall-crawler long enough to kill him.

When The Chameleon learned that the device suppressed Spider-Man's powers, he hired this assortment of villains to kill the web-head. Of course, The Chameleon's story revealed to Peter that he hadn't entirely lost his powers, so he could find a way to regain them. While The Black Cat held off the villains, Spider-Man reworked the machine so he could reactivate his powers. Felicia put up a good fight against the villains, but eventually, she became overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Fortunately, Peter recovered his powers just in time.

Back in action, Spider-Man easily defeated all of his foes. Although The Chameleon managed to escape, Peter still destroyed the machine and fled with The Black Cat. Unfortunately, Felicia was also affected by the rays, causing her to lose her own powers. Despite this loss, Peter and Felicia parted on good terms. Later, Peter enjoyed an afternoon with MJ and Aunt May, who expressed just how proud she was of her nephew. Even without his powers, Peter Parker maintained his greatest strength of responsibility.
