WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Devil's Reign: Superior Four #3, available now from Marvel.

In what has easily been the least expected side effect of Wilson Fisk's crusade against the heroes of New York City, Otto Octavius has teamed up with various versions of himself from across the Multiverse before stepping through to an alien dimension together. Now that the Doctor Octopus that fans know best has been betrayed by these variant Ottos, although they have good reason to work against him. As the most powerful of them all has just revealed, they are the ones who pose the greatest threat to the Multiverse, and they have already nearly destroyed it once before.

While the primary Doctor Octopus suffers in silence after the loss of his mechanical limbs, the Supreme Ock has taken the opportunity to explain the full scope of his mission to the other Ottos. As revealed in the pages of Devil's Reign: Superior Four #3 (by Zac Thompson, Davide Tinto, Matt Milla, and VC's Ariana Maher), their ilk have become entangled within the very fabric of all realities, and it isn't the first time this has happened. Otto Werner Von Strange, the Supreme Ock, explained to the others that his mission grew out of pure necessity following a near cataclysmic war between Ottos which threatened to destroy the Multiverse as we know it. The Superior Four have been gathered together by the Supreme Ock in the hopes that one of them will decide to take his place before history repeats itself.

Doctor Octopus has gone through some genuinely impossible transformations in the years since he first appeared in 1963's Amazing Spider-Man #3 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, but none of his prior shifts in shape or persona have ever indicated that he was someone of Multiversal importance. Now that the news is out, it makes perfect sense that the Supreme Ock was willing to go to such lengths if it meant staving off the threat of another one of himself going rogue. With all of the Ottos across all realities, not to mention their endless ambitions, it is only a matter of time before the Multiverse is rocked by their infighting once again. In fact, once the primary Otto's own return culminates in the apparent death of the Supreme Ock, that may have already come to pass.

This all sets up what might effectively become the next Spider-Verse, or at the very least a scenario that is reminiscent of it. It could also put the primary Otto Octavius into a role more akin to something Kang the Conqueror is accustomed to. Though it was the Supreme Ock who had taken to lording over his variants and culling those who opposed him, the primary Otto had already begun delving into disturbingly similar territory immediately after forming the Superior Four. Now that the Supreme Ock is seemingly out of the picture for good, there is no one keeping his primary counterpart or his Multiversal aspirations in check. Assuming Otto's hubris keeps him from realizing the full scope of his actions, they stand to make him the next conqueror of the Multiverse, if not its doom.

As hard as it is to imagine, Doctor Octopus is quickly becoming the most important person in every reality, and the consequences of his ascension look to be dire. Considering how closely tied to this facet of the Multiverse the Superior Four have come to be, it is likely that they have already jumpstarted the beginning of the Otto-Verse without realizing it. If nothing else, the other Ottos understand the gravity of the situation they have become embroiled in. That doesn't mean they are in any real position to prevent things from getting out of hand. Especially not when they were so quick to turn on the Supreme Ock following their primary counterpart's personal epiphany.

There is always some slim chance that the Supreme Ock wasn't telling the others the entire truth, or that by making yet another heroic turn the primary Otto has staved off the threat that brought him to this other world. On the other hand, the concept of an Otto-Verse in itself is one that hardly seems like it will be swept under the rug anytime soon. The Superior Four's time with the Supreme Ock may have come to an end, but primary Otto's wariness of his return implies that this was only the start of their story together. Hopefully the next time they meet it won't be under such devastating circumstances. Then again, it's perfectly clear that the worst of this entire situation is still to come.
