WARNING: Spoilers follow for The Amazing Spider-Man #53.LR by Federico Vicenetini, Takeshi Miyazawa, Scott Ganna, Marco Menyz, Erick Arciniega, and VC's Ariana Maher, on sale now.

Spider-Man is facing the true cost of his past sins, particularly those he made during "One More Day," the storyline in which he and Mary Jane gave their love and marriage to Mephisto in exchange for the life of Aunt May. Now, his friends and allies in the Order of the Web are forced to battle the literalized demons of his past as well.

In Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man had to relive the event immediately following "One More Day," where he was at Harry Osborn's welcome home party, an event where he saw Mary Jane Watson. But now, they lived in a world where they never married and Harry never died. After reliving this moment, Kindred unmasked as Harry and threw out the line "gotcha," which was another blast from the past — this one taking place before "One More Day" changed everything, from an issue where Harry helped Chameleon ruin Peter's life from beyond the grave. The final words Peter heard from Harry was on a video where Harry yelled "gotcha" over and over.

Spider-Man Dream Demons

In Amazing Spider-Man #53.LR, Peter's allies are trying to find and save him, and Doctor Strange took the Order of the Web into Spider-Man's astral plane, which had changed completely from the last time that they were there. As Strange said, there was evil there, and he had his suspicions about what happened. That is when a series of demons attacked them, all tying into "One More Day."

The first to attack was a four-armed demon, with multiple guns, trying to kill Spider-Gwen and Madame Web. This was the demonic version of Jake Martino, an assassin that Kingpin hired to kill Spider-Man. However, he missed, and the bullet struck Aunt May instead. Spider-Man tried to beat Martino to death after this, but a second assassin killed Martino before Spider-Man could finish him off. That led to the second demon, a giant version of Wilson Fisk, the man who hired Martino and was ultimately responsible for Aunt May being shot.

After this, the heroes had to face demonic versions of Aunt May and Mary Jane. When May was on the brink of death, Spider-Man went to Doctor Strange, who told Peter that he was unable to help. However, Mephisto later stepped in and offered to save May's life, at a cost.

This comes directly out of the pages of the final issue of "One More Day." In Amazing Spider-Man #545, by J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada, Mephisto offers to save Aunt May but only by wiping the marriage of Peter and MJ out of existence. Mary Jane's exact words to Mephisto is "the answer is yes." She asks Peter to be the hero he knows he is, and he agreed as well, and everything changed. The second that the demonic MJ said, "The answer is yes," Doctor Strange said, "I knew it," and it's clear he knows Peter and MJ made a deal with Mephisto.

In the main issues, Peter faced this again as Harry presented him with the "One More Day" decision that Mephisto wiped from everyone's memories. In this astral plane, Doctor Strange and the Order of the Web had to fight all the demons from the event, from the man who shot Aunt May and the man who hired him. They then had to fight the demonic Aunt May and finally Mary Jane, and the words she said to the devil. The events of "One More Day" haunted Spider-Man fans for years, and now it is coming back to hit him and his friends where it hurts the most.
