Marvel Comics' Spider-Man is a flagship character who has had countless storylines. Inevitably, in a number of these stories the friendly neighborhood web-slinger has met his demise or is pushed to the brink of it.

He always seems to come back though as exemplified in this dialogue from the Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse film:

"Above all, no matter how many times you get hit, can you get back up? Because when a Spider-Man is on the floor…When you think you’ve given your all… When you think you can’t keep going… Spider-Man always gets up."

10 "Death" In Spider-Man #17 (1991)

This comic titled "The Death of... Spider-Man at the hands of Thanos!" was a bizarre philosophical story that ended quite vaguely. While the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler did seemingly succumb to a deadly toxin when trying to save a young girl and her mother, his apparent "death" was never really confirmed since he was stuck in limbo with the Mad Titan, which also may or may not have happened in Spidey's head.

In the end, Thanos taunts Spider-Man's heroism by saying that the young girl he saved is dying too and is about to join them in limbo. At the last moment, however, Mistress Death shows up and saves Spidey and the girl and revives them, much to the chagrin of Thanos.

9 Almost Dies But Is Saved With Cyborg Parts Like Deathlok's

In one of his many battles with the Sinister Six, Spider-Man and the mercenary Solo are tricked into engaging each other by Mysterio's technology, which causes Solo to attack Spider-Man because he thought he was shooting at the Sinister Six and almost kills him.

Fortunately, Spider-Man is rescued by Cyborg X from Solo's killing blow and then takes Spidey to the scientist Oscar McDonnell who saves his life by installing cybernetic parts on him. With his new upgrades, and help from several unexpected teammates, including Deathlok, he subsequently defeats the Sinister Six.

8 Beaten To Death By Terraxia On Infinity Gauntlet

Spider-Man fighting Thanos.

In one of the most brutal displays during the Infinity Gauntlet saga, Spider-Man joins the other heroes in the battle against Thanos. While he gets in a few good hits on Thanos, he is quickly occupied by Thanos' newly created lover, Terraxia, who grabs Spidey and beats him to death in the background as the other heroes engage Thanos in combat.

It was a jarring scene to see at the time but after Thanos is defeated, the web-slinger is eventually revived with the Infinity Gauntlet along with the other fallen heroes.

7 When He Became Poison

Poison is an incarnation of Peter Parker (Earth-70134) who was cocooned under the Brooklyn Bridge after his second battle with Morlun. He underwent an incomplete metamorphosis that causes the consciousness of Peter Parker to be killed and overtaken by the Venom symbiote, after sensing Parker's dire situation and leaving its current host, Mac Gargan.

Poison refers to itself as "I" instead of "We" like most symbiotes, which confirms that it has a singular consciousness rather than sharing one with a host.

6 Zombie Spider-Man

An undead Spider-Man in the Marvel Zombies universe

In the Marvel Zombies universe (Earth-2149), Spider-Man falls victim to the zombie infection, dies and reanimates into a zombie who possesses all his powers.

In one particularly tragic scene, Spider-Man tries to combat the infection while trying to warn Mary Jane Watson and his aunt May about the impending zombie apocalypse. Right at that moment, however, he turns and proceeds to eat the two women he holds most dear in his life, and Mary Jane becomes zombified as well.

5 Killed By Kraven The Hunter

Spider-Man and Kraven the Hunter in Kraven's Last Hunt

In Kraven's most iconic story from the comics, he defeats Spider-Man, seemingly shoots him dead, and buries him. Kraven then dons Spider-Man's costume and goes to prove to himself he's better at being Spider-Man, albeit more brutal. Although his run as a fake web-slinger only lasted two weeks, Kraven was able to claim superiority as Spider-Man by capturing Vermin, who Spidey needed Captain America's help with.

After Spider-Man revives and digs himself out of his own grave, he finds Kraven who is satisfied with himself for his perceived victory. Kraven doesn't engage a fight and abruptly retires. In a shocking twist, after Kraven is finally at peace with his accomplishments, he commits suicide and leaves evidence behind to prove Spider-Man's innocence while he was impersonating him.

4 Morlun Kills Alternate Universe Spider-Men & Almost Kills Earth-616 Spider-Man

Morlun is the vampiric dimension-hopping Spider-Totem hunter who played a huge part in the Spider-Geddon event. Prior to his encounter with prime Spider-Man, he, along with The Inheritors, hunted down and killed countless multiverse Spider-People and Spider-Totems.

In his epic final battle with Spider-Man, however, he fails to kill him but instead only inflicts grave injuries, breaks his wrist (to disable his web-shooters), and eats an eyeball he plucks out. Spider-Man is only saved by Miles Morales and an army of Spider-Men who distracts and traps Morlun in a cage.

3 Saved by The Punisher during Civil War

Spider-Man is carried by the Punisher

During the Civil War comic event where Spider-Man sides with Iron Man and reveals his identity to the public, he is brought to the brink of death after SHIELD agents shoot him and the two villains Jester and Jack O'Lantern, whom Tony Stark hired, hunt him down after Spidey is disillusioned by the shady actions Stark has been doing and decided to defect to Captain America's side.

If not for the Iron Spider armor that Stark gave him (which partially blocked the gunshots from the SHIELD agents, and a timely assist and rescue by The Punisher, Spider-Man would have definitely been an unfortunate casualty in this epic storyline.

2 Superior Spider-Man Death: Mind Swap With Doctor Octopus

In one of the most oddly compelling Spider-Man storylines, Peter Parker and Dr. Otto Octavius swap minds after the latter finds out his deteriorating body will soon kill him.

Otto's villainous plan backfires though as Peter, who was moments from dying in Otto's body, is able to impart his memories and consciousness unto Otto's mind because of an unexpected link in their psyche from the mind swap. This compelled Otto to continue Peter's heroic legacy as the Superior Spider-Man.

His run is short-lived, however, as his brutal and violent brand of heroism is met with great resistance. This prompts Otto to eventually sacrifice himself in order to bring Peter's consciousness back into the forefront and reclaim the Spider-Man mantle.

1 Ultimate Universe Death

\

In Spider-Man's heroic death in the Ultimate universe (Earth-1610), he takes a bullet for Captain America shot by The Punisher, who then regrets shooting Spidey and turns himself in.

After his gunshot wound was deemed non-fatal, Spider-Man continued to fight and eventually ends up facing the Sinister Six whom he defeats after a grueling battle where his injuries took a toll. Just as it seemed he was going to survive the ordeal, a nearby truck explodes that critically injures him, which eventually causes his death.

Following his death, of course, Miles Morales is inspired to take up the mantle of Spider-Man.

Later on, however, this death ends up getting retconned again as he is revived by the OZ compound in his body. Basically cementing the fact that Spider-Man (like most iconic comic book superheroes) can never truly die.
