The many heroes of Marvel Comics' Spider-Verse are set to star in a trilogy of connecting variant covers from artist Jie Yuan to celebrate Chinese New Year 2020. Yuan's variants will be released across three titles: Amazing Spider-Man, Symbiote Spider-Man: Alien Reality and the upcoming Gwen Stacy.
Yuan's cover for February's Amazing Spider-Man #39 sees the original Spider-Man himself, Peter Parker, taking center stage. Peter is joined by Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099, Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider, Kaine Parker/Scarlet Spider, Cosmic Spider-Man, Future Foundation Spider-Man, SP//dr and Pavitr Prabhakar/Spiderman, among others.
Meanwhile Yuan's variant for Symbiote Spider-Man: Alien Reality #3 stars Miles Morales/Spider-Man alongside the likes of Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider, the PS4 version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Iron-Spider, Spider-Man Noir and Mayday Parker/Spider-Girl.
Finally, Yuan's Gwen Stacy #1 variant cover sees Cindy Moon/Silk leading the charge of yet another legion of Spider-people, including Earth-616's Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Earth-1610's Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman and Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk.
When connected vertically, these three variants create a larger-than-life image that represents the Spider-Verse's Spider-Army operating at full power. What's more, fans looking to complete the proverbial triforce can do so with relative ease, as all three comics in question are scheduled to go on sale the same day.
Yuan was enlisted by Marvel after the House of Ideas teamed up with graphic tablet company Wacom in order to conduct a nationwide talent search throughout China. "It was a thrill for me to visit art schools and conventions around China last year as part of this massive talent search,” said Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. "We reviewed hundreds of submissions and these covers are by the artists whose unique visual styles we felt best captured the Marvel characters. We hope fans love them as much as we do as Marvel continues our global approach to discovering diverse artistic voices!" Marvel suggests more variant covers commemorating the occasion are on the way.
Amazing Spider-Man #39 is written by Nick Spencer and illustrated by Iban Coello with a main cover by Patrick Gleason. Symbiote Spider-Man: Alien Reality #3 is written by Peter David and illustrated by Greg Land with a main cover by land. Gwen Stacy #1 is written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Todd Nauck with a main cover by Adam Hughes. All three issues go on sale Feb. 12 from Marvel Comics.
