SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home, in theaters now.
Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts teased that Ben Parker may yet have a role to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"Did you notice his initials on Peter’s suitcase?" director Jon Watts asked ScreenCrush.
Here, Watts refers to one of new film's many Easter eggs, where Peter packs up his belongings for his school trip across Europe in a suitcase with the initials "BFP." The monogramming is not only a nod to Ben's presence, but also confirms his existence within this version of Spider-Man's story. What's more interesting, though, is Watts' followup to this observation.
"We never specifically say anything about him. So whether or not he’s around. Everything’s on the table, is how I like to say it," he added.
What Watts is implying could be a seismic shift for the mythos of Uncle Ben. It was always assumed he was dead, as in the comics and previous films. If he is alive and simply not in the picture, does this imply a bad breakup between him and Marisa Tomei's Aunt May?
While she seems to be hanging onto his luggage, it's safe to say Ben is gone in one way or another. With at least one more Spider-Man film planned, it's now possible he could make his MCU debut sometime in the future.
Opening July 2, director Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, JB Smoove, Jacob Batalon and Martin Starr, with Marisa Tomei and Jake Gyllenhaal.
