The biggest shock about the trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, outside of it being released so soon, was that Miles Morales' next adventure will take up more than one film.In response to the trailer's Part One title, co-writer Christopher Miller confirmed on Twitter, "It's true, Spider-Man: Across The #SpiderVerse is Part One of two films. Me, [Philip Lord], [Justin K. Thompson], [Kemp Powers], [Joaquim Dos Santos] and an incredible crew are working on both films simultaneously!" Miller also said that, in addition to Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld and Oscar Isaac reprising their Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse roles as Miles, Gwen Stacey/Spider-Woman and Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099, Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will feature "a bunch of old friends... and many new ones."RELATED: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Sequel Title Indicates A Third Film

Unlike Miles and Gwen, Spider-Man 2099 did not play a major role in Into the Spider-Verse's story until its post-credit scene. After being briefed on the film's events by his AI assistant Lyla, Miguel is given a wrist-mounted device that lets him freely traverse the multiverse, starting out with a trip to Earth-67 that directly resembles the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon. However, this trip only leads to a shouting match between Miguel and Earth-67 Spider-Man, homaging the show's now-iconic internet meme of two Spider-Men pointing at one another.

Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)'s synopsis, which Sony Pictures released with its trailer, teases Miles working with Gwen "and a new team of Spider-People" to fight a mysterious multiverse antagonist. Despite picking up directly where Into the Spider-Verse ended, Across the Spider-Verse's trailer confirms that it takes place in "another another universe" and features a slightly taller Miles, who receives an unexpected guest in Gwen. Popping into his room from her own dimension, Gwen asks Miles if he wants to hang out, despite Miles being grounded for reasons unknown. Rather than resolve that point, Across the Spider-Verse instead focuses on an unexpected battle between Miles and Miguel, with the latter using his device to teleport them across worlds.

So far, two known "new" Marvel characters are confirmed to appear in the Spider-Verse sequel. These include Jessica Drew's Spider-W0man (voiced by Issa Rae) and the 1978 Japanese Spider-Man TV show incarnation, who regularly fought monsters in a giant alien robot called Leopardon.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Part One releases in theaters Oct. 7, 2022.
