Following leaked footage, the official debut trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally dropped. It shows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) adapting to life after being outed as Spidey by Mysterio, going from being a fugitive to a celebrity that has no privacy. However, his world literally crumbles as Marvel's multiverse, per the end of Loki, starts unraveling. Interestingly, as Peter tries to piece together some semblance of normalcy, it becomes clear that Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange is indeed the multiverse's greatest threat.

In the clip, Peter tracks Strange down and enters his Sanctum Sanctorum where, sadly, Strange is as arrogant and cavalier as ever. Peter wants him to mind-wipe the world so he can go back to his old life, with Wong making it clear his comrade shouldn't tamper with space and time like that. Yet Strange winks at Peter as his colleague departs and performs the spell anyway. The ritual either backfires or is sabotaged, but what really stands out is that Strange should never have agreed to do this in the first place.

He really doesn't seem to have learned anything from the past as he carries out the spell, asking Peter to keep quiet so he can concentrate. It harkens back to him being irresponsible as a surgeon in his first solo film, even believing there'd be no consequences for messing with relics like the Time Stone when he actually became a superhero. One would think after Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, he'd exercise more caution but for some reason, Strange is extremely lax about Peter's request and uses his powers for selfish reasons that go against the fabric of nature.

As he's warned by Wong about placing the multiverse at risk to grant the wish of a teenager, it's important to note that Marvel Studios has been deceptively editing video clips recently to hide certain revelations. This scene may not play out exactly the same in Spider-Man: No Way Home but as it stands, Strange is cast as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Mephisto.

What's quite intriguing is at the 0:39 mark, there's a "devil in disguise" sign, but while it seems to refer to people's disdain towards Peter for lying, it could foreshadow Strange actually being Mephisto, offering Peter a deal that's too good to be true. After all, erasing the world's memory of his secret identity is what the demon did for Spidey in the controversial "One More Day" storyline.

That said, even if this is the real Strange just taking an unnecessary risk, he is the inadvertent villain of Spider-Man: No Way Home. He ought to be setting an example as one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which is surprisingly something that Iron Man nailed with the young, impressionable webhead. Ultimately, it's careless on the sorcerer's part, which seems to be the main reason this partnership is going to be something the wall-crawler, and probably all of reality, will come to regret.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on Dec. 17.
