Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to be a much darker game than Insomniac's previous entry in the franchise.

Speaking on the latest episode of This Week in Marvel, Bill Rosemann, the company's creative vice president, shed some more light on the upcoming PlayStation exclusive. Without delving into too many specifics, Rosemann confirmed that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will be a grimmer experience, featuring a heavier tone in comparison to both the first game and the spin-off Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

"If the first Spider-Man game was Star Wars, Spider-Man 2 is kind of our Empire," said Rosemann. "It gets a little darker." The Marvel executive is referencing Star Wars: The Empire Strikes back, the second film released in the original trilogy which took A New Hope's whimsical space opera tone added a sense of dread and defeat into the mix.

Little is currently known about Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man 2 beyond a few assumptions pulled from the teaser released during the latest PlayStation 5 Showcase event. The brief teaser features Peter Parker, in his now-iconic Advanced Suit, fighting thugs alongside Miles Morales. Narrated by what fans assume to be Kraven the Hunter, given his monologue on finding an adversary worthy of his time, Venom appears towards the end to seemingly taunt our heroes.

While two Spider-Mans will be present in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games has confirmed that it will be a single-player game. As for casting, Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jeter are reprising their roles as Peter Parker and Miles Morales respectively. Venom will be voiced by Tony Todd, whom horror fans will no doubt recognize from the Candyman series wherein he plays the titular villain.

It's currently unknown whether the Venom in Insomniac Games' Spider-Man series is Eddie Brock, who most would associate as the toothy symbiote. The post-credits scene of the original PlayStation 4 game suggests it may be Harry Osborn, although it's currently unknown if the sequel will continue this particular narrative thread.

During the same PlayStation event, Insomniac Games also unveiled a teaser trailer for Marvel's Wolverine, an upcoming game starring the gruff, clawed mutant. Similar to Marvel's Spider-Man 2, little is known about the project beyond the fact that it will feature a "mature tone" and will release exclusively for PlayStation 5.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 doesn't yet have a launch date but more information will likely be shared in the coming months.
