A variant cover for the second issue of the upcoming five-part limited series Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse sees artist Peach Momoko -- one of Marvel's Stormbreakers -- offer her take on "Gwenverine," an alternate version of Gwen Stacy who possesses the abilities of the mutant Wolverine.

Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #2 is slated to hit comic shops this coming March, following issue #1's release in February. Gwenverse #2 features a design variant by the aforementioned Momoko, which highlights various aspects of Gwenverine's design, including notes regarding the material her outfit is made of, as well as how she styles her hair.

Leading the charge in Gwenverse is none other than Earth-65's Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, also known by the names Spider-Gwen and Ghost-Spider. The limited series sees Spider-Gwen team up with various other Gwen Stacys from across the multiverse, including versions with the powers of such Marvel heroes as Captain America, Captain Marvel, Thor, Iron Man and, of course, Wolverine.

Interestingly enough, however, Marvel readers have actually seen "Gwenverine" before. The Gwen Stacy of Earth-72699, Gwenverine made her one and only canon appearance thus far in Secret Wars: Battleworld #3 by Ivan Brandon and Aaron Conley, which was published by Marvel Comics on July 15, 2015. In that issue, Gwenverine is one of many alternate versions of Wolverine called upon by Mojo to attack Monk Wolverine, the pacifist James Howlett (aka Logan) of Earth-15093.

One month prior to Secret Wars: Battleworld #3's release, Gwenverine appeared on artist Chris Samnee's variant cover for Old Man Logan #2 by Brian Michael Bendis and Andrea Sorrentino. In addition to Momoko's variant for Gwenverse #2, Gwenverine also appears on the main cover for Gwenverse #1, and takes center stage on Greg Land's variant cover for issue #3.

All that being said, it remains to be seen if the Gwenverine present in the Gwenverse series is the same version from Earth-72699 that readers first met during Secret Wars, or perhaps another version entirely.

Written by Tim Seeley and illustrated by Jodi Nishijima, Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse #1 goes on sale Feb. 9, 2022 from Marvel Comics. Issue #2 follows suit in March.
