Mexican actor and filmmaker Eugenio Derbez will star as the voice of the beloved mouse in Warner Bros.' upcoming Speedy Gonzales animated feature.

Deadline reports that the film, first revealed in December, will be a heist caper written by Hank Nelken ("Saving Silverman").

Tentatively titled "Speedy," the update of the classic "Looney Tunes" character will be produced by Dylan Sellers through his Rivers Edge Films, Derbez's 3Pas Studios and Warner Bros.

“We see this as an origin story of the great master, like a Robin Hood character, who ultimately ends up taking from the rich and giving to the poor,” Sellers told Deadline. “In a time when Donald Trump is gaining momentum, the world needs Speedy more than ever.”

"The Fastest Mouse in All Mexico," Speedy made his official debut in a 1955 animated short directed by Friz Freleng. Although there have been concerns in the United States in recent decades that the character is an offensive ethnic stereotype, Speedy remains popular in Latin America.
