In a newly released behind-the-scenes video for “Spectre,” director Sam Mendes explains what led him to return to the Bond franchise following 2012’s “Skyfall.”
The reasons I’m doing the second Bond movie are the reasons I would do any movie, really, which is all to do with the story,” the Oscar winner says. “In this movie, in ‘Spectre,’ what you have his a movie entirely driven by Bond. He is on a mission from the very beginning. He is on the hunt, on the trail of somebody — you don’t know why, you don’t know what he’s doing there — and that sense that something is up is also tied to the second part of the crucial story about Bond’s childhood. So once it was clear that those huge things were on the table, I felt like I had to do it.”
He adds that, because he introduced Ralph Fiennes as M, Ben Whishaw as Q and Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, he wanted to further develop their characters.
Starring Daniel Craig once again as James Bond, “Spectre” also features Rory Kinnear, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Monica Bellucci, David Bautista and Andrew Scott. The film opens Nov. 6.
