A classic Spider-Man voice actor has tossed his hat into the ring for a shot at making a Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse cameo.Josh Keaton, best known for his work on The Spectacular Spider-Man, quote-tweeted a Fandom Twitter post that asked viewers to "Drop a comment for your choice to join the #SpiderVerse sequels." Citing his titular character, who happened to appear on the mashup image Fandom posted, Keaton responded, "The one and only Spectacular Spider-Man." In addition to the Spectacular Spidey, the post featured multiple Spider-heroes from past animated series, such as Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man Unlimited.RELATED: Spider-Verse Sequel Depicts the Multiverse in Drastically Different Art Styles

Created by Greg Weisman, The Spectacular Spider-Man ran for two seasons from 2008-09 and followed a young Peter Parker trying to balance high-school drama with the rise of new supervillains across New York City. The show is widely regarded as one of the best Spider-Man adaptations of all time, but it was canceled after 26 episodes due to Disney acquiring the character's rights from Sony Television. Afterwards, Weisman co-created the DC animated series Young Justice, whose fourth season featured recurring appearances by Keaton's League of Shadows mercenary Black Spider -- a character whose personality and humor bear a resemblance to Spectacular Spider-Man's lead.

Despite Spectacular's cancelation, Keaton continued to voice the webslinger in various video games, most notably Ultimate Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Amazing Spider-Man in its sequel, Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Centering on a multiverse premise, Shattered Dimensions cast Keaton alongside fellow Spider-Man voice actors Neil Patrick Harris (Spider-Man: The New Animated Series), Christopher Daniel Barnes (Spider-Man: TAS) and Dan Gilvezan (Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends) as alternate-dimension Spider-Men working together to stop a common foe. Only Barnes would return alongside Keaton in Edge of Time, though this concept would later be adapted into the comics as Spider-Verse and on the big screen as 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) confirmed the return of Miles Morales' Spider-Man and Gwen Stacey's Spider-Woman in its recently dropped first-look trailer. Joining the two is Oscar Isaac's Spider-Man 2099, who is shown scuffling with Miles across multiple dimensions and will have a larger story role following his Into the Spider-Verse post-credits scene debut. Aside from Issa Rae's Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, no other major actors have been confirmed for alternate Spider-Man voice roles. A rumor was floated in April that Barnes would return as his 1990s animated character, but it was later dismissed by Spider-Man TAS series writer John Semper Jr. Around that time, Keaton tweeted his interest in playing Spider-Man again.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) arrives in theaters Oct. 7, 2022.
