Spawn can do anything. Let's just start right there. His powers are limited to his imagination. This may be why his powers seem confusing, because the imagination knows no bounds. What makes Spawn truly confusing are his multiple evolutions, which impacted his powers every time. Think of Spawn as Jesus. Despite limitless powers, he is always destined to be sacrificed.

The source of Spawn's powers are biblical in nature. Originally, created by Malebolgia, a devil of sorts, a lord of Hell, who is responsible for building Hell's army for the forthcoming Armageddon. Al Simmons, a.k.a. Spawn, was to be the leader of that army as Hell's newest Hellspawn. Things didn't really go according to plan because Al Simmons had different ideas. As a result of Spawn's constant clashing with the Christian universe he exists in, his powers are continuously evolving. Here are 10 of his most confusing powers finally explained.

10 Made of Green Goo

Spawn is comprised of a green goo called Necroplasm. It's a magical substance native to Hell. In the Spawn universe, Hell is entirely comprised of a substance called Psychoplasm. Psychoplasm shares properties with Necroplasm, but what makes Necroplasm special is that it can exist beyond the boundaries of Hell.

All Hellspawns are comprised of the magic green goo. It's as if the Necroplasm were the equivalent to the cellular makeup of human beings, except Hellspawns can manipulate their cells to do magic stuff. The Necroplasm is the source of Spawn's infinite power, giving him anything from superhuman strength to healing powers and everything his imagination can come up with in between. Hellspawns are created with a limited amount of Necroplasm however. Once it's depleted, they go back to Hell, giving up their souls.

9 Shape-shifter

Before Spawn learned to control his power, he would try to transform himself from his disfigured Hellspawn form back into a human. This was an effort to make contact with his ex-wife Wanda whom Al Simmons jeopardized his soul for. The joke was on Al Simmons though because, despite immense power, he couldn't transform himself back into the black man he once was.

Not only that, every time Spawn transformed into this average white guy, he would expend a tremendous amount of his power. Spawn shapeshifting causes his power to deplete faster, making his time on Earth before going back to Hell a lot shorter. As Spawn grew into his powers, he learned to gain more control over changing his appearance, even managing to transform back into human Al Simmons at one point.

8 Feed The Suit, Feed the Soul

Spawn's suit eats bugs. Well, technically, the costume eats Necroplasm and Spawn draws the dark energy of carrion insects to replenish the Necroplasm. The suit can actually feed off of many sources of dark energy in the physical world. It'll feed from most animals, including the evil ambiance of humans. It can even feed off the dark energy of entire cities.

Spawn has a symbiotic relationship with the suit. Spawn supports the suit and the suit supports Spawn. There's a living ecosystem to Spawn's being. The suit feeds off Spawn, Spawn feeds off the living environment, together they become a badass biomass of Hell on Earth.

7 The Dead Resurrects The Dead

Spawn can resurrect the dead, which is kind of ironic considering he's a dead man creating life. Usually, from life comes death, not from death comes life, but Spawn is a confusing being with confusing powers.

To clear it up, Spawn's true power is his will. Sometimes his will is so great that he can bring the dead back to life as he did with his friend Bobby. Bobby is a loyal follower of Spawn. The two friends met while living in an alleyway together in Rat City. When Bobby was shot by Spawn's nemesis Chapel, Spawn would not let his friend die, expending a lot of his finite energy to save him.

6 Negative Empathy

Spawn senses darkness in others. Misery, pain, and hatred are emotions Spawn can dial into and draw out of living beings. This telepathic power can be used across great distances or up close in-person. Like a vampiric Catholic Priest taking confession, he can suck the sin from a person.

This power was given to him by a being called The Keeper, who is basically the creator of the universe. The power is more of a curse than a gift though. Absorbing and being filled with the misery of others makes Spawn a crabby Hellspawn. Martyrs have to deal with misery if they're going to save the universe from Armageddon. Spawn will die for our sins.

5 Army Of Souls

Spawn contained an army of Hellspawn within him. He called this army The Legion. This collection of souls are the spirits of those who died in the same hour as Al Simmons. It was theorized The Legion consisted of around 6000 souls at first. A lot like the suit Spawn wears, the souls share a symbiotic relationship with Spawn.

When the souls pass on to a higher plane, Spawn suffers, but he retains the knowledge and experiences of the souls he's lost. Due to Spawn having to fight back Armageddon, his Legion was reduced to a dozen remaining souls. Eventually, all the remaining souls were killed off by Al Simmons' daughter Morana. Kids...always taking your souls away from you.

4 Terrakinesis

Spawn swallowed a God with the Earth once. As Spawn grew into his powers throughout his adventures, he encountered a God called Urizen. Urizen was a demon older than time that consumes the souls of innocents. At first, Urizen was too strong a foe for Spawn to battle. The demon God impaled Spawn on a sign and left him to die. Spawn was resurrected through Greenworld, a living sentient planet that exists between the planes of Heaven and Hell.

The Keeper (a Greenworld resident) ends up giving Spawn the power over nature itself to fight Urizen. In the battle, Spawn slows Urizen by entrapping him with trees, then the angel Angela assists Spawn by using her Dimensional Lance to pack Urizen down into the Earth. Nature swallows the demon, imprisoning him in the Earth's crust.

3 Transmutation

Transmutation is the power to manipulate molecules. Basically, taking a substance and changing it into another substance. You know...magic. When Spawn was still figuring out how powerful he was, he met a fictional representation of Harry Houdini. The magician taught Spawn that he can use his command over supernatural energies to alter reality.

Houdini opened Spawn's eyes to how he can "convince" the natural world to work with his will, explaining that you can't defy the laws of physics because magic works with nature, not against it. This lesson of working with nature foreshadows Spawn's evolution of powers when he receives the power over nature itself.

2 Time Manipulation

If he feels like it, Spawn can stop time just to give himself a quiet moment to contemplate. Spawn had a bud named Cogliostro. He was a mentor to Al Simmons when he became a Hellspawn. Once Spawn defeated Malebolgia, then refused to take over ruling Hell, he left the door open between Heaven and Hell, leading Spawn towards consequences that Cog was trying to warn him about.

Overwhelmed with his growing power of omnipotence, Spawn needed to quiet the helpless beings of Earth to decide what the best course of action for the universe would be. He considered letting Hell overcome Earth, then reboot Hell in his own image as God-like beings tend to do.

1 Nigh-Omnipotence

As stated before, Spawn can do anything, the only reason he is not fully omnipotent is because of the limitations that are continually put upon him by external forces. When the Keeper, a.k.a. The Man of Miracles, a.k.a. creator of the universe, and an actual omnipotent being gives Spawn the powers to rival her children, God and Satan, Spawn becomes the third all-powerful in the battle of Armageddon.

Spawn uses his God-powers to destroy the armies of Heaven and Hell as well as humanity. Then he just starts over, using his nigh-omnipotence to recreate Earth and restore humanity back to life. No harm, no foul.
