Todd McFarlane's planned film reboot of Spawn has a new writer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brian Tucker has been hired to write the script for the new Spawn movie. Tucker previously wrote Broken City, the 2013 political thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe.
McFarlane, creator of the original Spawn comic book series, is set to direct the new film, which is produced by Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions. McFarlane and Blum both serve as producers on Spawn, with Carla Hacken serving as an executive producer.
McFarlane originally introduced the character of Spawn to the world of comic books via Spawn #1, which was published by Image Comics in 1992. The chain-wielding anti-hero received his first live-action feature film just five years later. Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, 1997's Spawn starred Michael Jai White as the title character.
McFarlane has been developing a new live-action Spawn movie since 2017, writing the reboot's initial script himself with the intent to direct as well. At one point, Jamie Foxx was attached to star as Spawn, while Jeremy Renner was attached to play Twitch Williams, with the actors having apparently been won over by McFarlane's script.
Given how long the project has been gestating and the fact that a new writer is now attached, however, it's unclear if Foxx and Renner are still involved with the project. That being said, according to THR, industry insiders note that the actors "could be re-approached" after the new script is written.
