The upcoming Spawn movie officially has its writers.

Creator Todd McFarlane took to Twitter to announce that Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier), Scott Silver (Joker) and Matthew Mixom are penning the script for the highly anticipated reboot. At the time of writing, details on Spawn's next blockbuster are scarce but actor Jamie Foxx is attached to the project as the star. The film currently does not have a director nor has the full cast been announced.

"I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s Spawn character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues," Spellman said. "Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what SPAWN is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there."

Spawn fans have been waiting for Al Simmons to return to the big screen ever since the critically panned 1997 movie starring Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo. Despite the film's reception, a sequel was planned but ultimately failed to transpire. McFarlane has teased another movie adaption for several years, reassuring fans that another film is in development. "We've made some announcements of people who are attached to it, but not all of them," McFarlane explained. "...We just wanna hold a little bit longer until we're a little bit closer to the final script that we're going to be selling out in Hollywood, so the buzz will be big."

Spawn Returns

McFarlane has previously empathized with fans who've expressed frustration regarding the lack of a formal announcement but has nonetheless remained tight-lipped on the status of Spawn. "I know when people don't get concrete names and information and stuff, and when I have to say, 'Stuff's happening. Just wait,' that's not very satisfying answer..." McFarlane said. "And that's what's frustrating, because I know that it's way more than that happening."

While some fans speculated that the creator would unveil new details on Spawn during San Diego Comic-Con 2022, the iconic comic book writer and artist explained that the plan was changed. The creative team had several conversations about revealing key details during the event but ultimately elected to save any reveals for New York Comic-Con 2022.

Foxx has noted that while production has yet to begin, he's seen early concept art for the suits that could appear in the next Spawn. "I've seen a lot of concepts," Foxx said. "Because Todd, what he does it, every single day he's doodling and he's fixing and he's doing some things that, to me, I think is gonna be like way out when you see it."

The Spawn movie does not yet have a release window.
