Space Jam: A New Legacy is earning much less than the original Space Jam film from 1996.

According to Gitesh Pandya, Space Jam: A New Legacy plummeted 77% on its second Friday in theaters, grossing $3.1 million. This makes the film's eight-day total $44.9 million, and Pandya predicts the movie will earn between $10-11 million for the weekend, bringing the domestic box office to $52 million in total. This means that Space Jam: A New Legacy would end its box office run well below the original 1996 Space Jam starring Michael Jordan, which earned $90.4 million overall.

The Space Jam sequel starring NBA star LeBron James premiered July 16 in select theaters and on HBO Max, pulling in$13.1 million at 3,965 theaters on its opening day, which put the film on track for a $32 million opening weekend. A New Legacy even dethroned the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Black Widow, at the box office, which earned $8 million on the same day. However, while A New Legacy also easily beat out the $27.5 million opening of the original the overall earnings of the Space Jam sequel still couldn't stack up to the earnings of the original film starring Michael Jordan.

Box office earnings aside, Space Jam: A New Legacy isn't getting much love from critics, currently sitting at 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, though it does have an 81% audience score. In comparison, Space Jam, which has a significant cult following, holds a 44% score on the Tomatometer.

Starring James, the Looney Tunes and other Warner Bros. characters, Space Jam: A New Legacy is still playing in theaters and on HBO Max.
