The long in-development sequel to 1996's Space Jam may have just found a new director for the project.

Warner Bros. is reportedly in advanced talks with Terence Nance to helm Space Jam 2 replacing previously attached director Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond). Nance currently serves as writer, director, star, and executive producer of the upcoming HBO series Random Acts of Flyness which is set to premiere this coming weekend.

A follow-up to the fan-favorite sports film featuring Michael Jordan teaming up with the Looney Tunes to defeat aliens in a pick-up basketball game has been in development since 2016. Los Angeles Lakers superstar Lebron James had signed a production deal with Warner Bros. after appearing in 2015's Trainwreck including an option for a new Space Jam film granting James final script approval on the project should he decide to star.

Lin had first been approached to direct but dropped out earlier this year partially due to delays including James' busy schedule as a forward and team captain for the Cleveland Cavaliers; Jordan had been retired from professional sports when he starred in the original film.

With James now based out of Los Angeles, participating in film projects may be more tenable for the basketball player though there is still no word if the sequel will feature the return of Bill Murray as himself.
