Space Invaders as a movie. No surprises there. Rights to a film adaptation of the 1978 coin-op game have been snatched up by Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment's Gigi Pritzker, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
The thing about Space Invaders is there's not really so much of a story. There are aliens. They're invading. You try to stop them with your shooting. Futurama summed things up from the aliens' perspective brilliantly: "Increase speed, drop down and reverse direction!" That's Space Invaders.
Di Bonaventura and Pritzker will work to develop an original story. It's a safe bet that aliens will be involved somehow. Expect a visual nod or two toward descending spaceships, probably issuing forth from a large saucer-shaped UFO hovering above them. All while an anti-air tank, driven by a crew that includes Shia LaBeouf, Will Smith and Dennis Quaid, fires on the invaders.
Just send my royalty checks to the CBR offices, Mr. di Bonaventura. Thanks.
