Development is starting on a new game based on the hit animated series South Park.

According to a job listing posted by Question Games, a studio comprising of several veterans of the industry, this new South Park project will likely be a multiplayer experience. The post notes that the position of Lead Level Designer requires the applicant to have successfully shipped at least one multiplayer game or have "equivalent or relevant experience." Further details on the game remain scarce but the listing does confirm that it will likely run on Unreal Engine 4 and is aiming to have levels that will have "aesthetically compelling moments and interesting tactical choices."

Beyond these few nuggets of information, nothing else is known about this new South Park game. Given that Question Games is still in the process of hiring a lead level designer, it's likely that the project is still in its infancy. It could be the case that this is the game mentioned in the recent deal struck by South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone with ViacomCBS Inc but this remains unconfirmed.

South Park is no stranger to video game adaptions. The controversial yet beloved television series has attached its name to several games, some of which proved more successful than others. The first interactive experience based on the weird and wonderful town was simply titled South Park and played like a standard first-person shooter. Players adventure around the city and toss snowballs at a variety of enemies while attempting to stop larger foes, known as "tanks," from escaping the level. The game also sported a four-player competitive mode which allowed gamers to duke it out with their friends via local split-screen. Upon its release, South Park received mixed to average reviews.

Modern audiences may be more familiar with the role-playing game South Park: The Stick of Truth. Released in 2014 and developed by Obsidian Entertainment, this open-world RPG places players in the boots of The New Kid, a child with a dark history that has just moved to the town. Featuring all the beloved characters from the series, The Stick of Truth earned almost universal praise for its compelling combat and writing which faithfully evoked the sense of humor and tone fans have come to enjoy. A sequel, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, launched in 2017.
