If last week’s Inception parody on South Park seemed a little familiar, it could be because you’d already seen parts of it online; the creators of the Comedy Central show have apologized for accidentally stealing lines from a viral video.
The New York Times quotes Matt Stone as saying, “It’s just because we do the show in six days, and we’re stupid and we just threw it together, but in the end, there are some lines that we had to call and apologize for.” According to Stone and co-creator Trey Parker, the problem arose when they were looking online for dialogue from Christopher Nolan’s summer blockbuster and found an August CollegeHumor.com video called “Inception Characters Don’t Understand Inception.” Unaware that the dialogue in that video wasn’t from the movie, they lifted some lines, and… the rest is embarrassing history. “We thought their joke was that a lot of those lines were actually in the movie, and they were banging them against each other, and showing that the Inception characters didn’t even know Inception. That was a mistake, and it was an honest mistake,” explained Stone.
Am I the only one surprised that neither Stone nor Parker had actually seen the movie before writing the episode, to recognize the fictional lines…?
