Soul won its second award of the night at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.

The Pixar animated film centered on the middle school music teacher Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture beating out fellow nominees Mank, News of the World, Tenet and The Midnight Sky, as reported by Variety.

Soul's score was composed by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste. Disney+, the streaming service which debuted Soul on its platform, tweeted out support to the musical cast and crew for their second award of the night -- after already winning the Golden Globe for the Best Animated Feature Film in 2020 -- noting, "Congratulations to Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste on their #GoldenGlobes win for Best Original Score! #PixarSoul"

The score for Soul has both a dramatic score and a jazz score. The dramatic section was written by Reznor and Ross and the jazz score was written by Batiste.

This joint collaboration almost disqualified the film from being considered for the 2020 Oscar for Best Original Score due to its parts and debate over overall score length. Reznor's and Ross's work fell short of the 60 percent requirement, and Batiste's work would typically be regarded as "source music" and thus not part of the main score. However, the decision was made by The Music Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to consider both sections of Soul's music to count as one score.

Composer Batiste tweeted out his enthusiasm for winning the Golden Globe, posting "WE GOT IT." An hour before his big win, Batiste wrote on Twitter, "Pulling up to the virtual

@goldenglobes with my dancing shoes on. We are all winners! Let's celebrate each other and celebrate life."

Soul tells the story of an aspiring jazz musician Joe Gardner who works as a middle school music teacher. After a tragic accident, he seeks to reunite his soul and his body after they are accidentally separated hours before his big musical break. Music from the film was inspired by a middle school jazz band out of Oakland, California.

Directed by Pete Docter and Kemp Powers, Soul stars Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs and Angela Bassett. The film is currently available on Disney+.
