At one point in Soul, Joe is forced to go to the barbershop after he tries to cut his own hair but fails. The film's co-director Kemp Powers recently discussed the importance of showing Joe at a Black-owned barbershop, stating, "Joe had to A) Get his hair fixed. And B) Enter a truly black space. And there's really no more authentic a black space in a community than a barbershop." Powers wrote the scene that ultimately made its way into Soul's final cut.

Foxx previously shared his enthusiasm for having Joe's barbershop scene in Soul's story, stating, "Kemp was smart, [he] was like, 'No, I want him to be Black, I want that haircut to be [right]. When we've got to get a cut, that’s a cultural thing."
