WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Deadpool: The End #1, by Joe Kelly, Mike Hawthorne, Victor Olazaba, Ruth Redmond and VC's Joe Sabino, on sale now.

One of Thanos' defining motivations is his desire to impress Death, who's been the object of his affections for years. In comics, this eventually led to the events of Jim Starlin, George Perez and Ron Lim's The Infinity Gauntlet. During that storyline, Thanos gathered the Infinity Gems and erased half the life in the universe. Although this sparked something of a relationship with Death, that didn't last, since the Mad Titan was eventually defeated and those lives were restored. Despite all of that, Marvel just revealed a future where Deadpool -- not Thanos -- ends up with Death.

Deadpool: The End #1 looks at some potential ends for Wade Wilson, and one sees the antihero trying to cheat Death in order to live forever. He instead encounters Ellie, his daughter. It's then revealed Deadpool is attempting to stop a now-elderly Ellie from dying. However, at her behest, Deadpool decides to give into Death. Ellie ends up going to a better place, while Deadpool and Death rule over their own realm, ready to "get to the ever'-lovin'-after-livin' nookie." The Merc With a Mouth remarks Death will probably get sick of him, though that's not seen in this particular ending.

Although this means Thanos doesn't end up with Death, one of the other endings teases the Mad Titan getting the last laugh. The "Domestic Bliss Ending" opens with Deadpool sits lazily in a chair, while Death nags him about not working. The two have evidently been together for over a thousand years and are currently in couple's counseling, which is hosted by Doc Samson. Death, in an attempt to frustrate Deadpool, reveals she's meeting up with Thanos for coffee, with the implication being that their meeting could lead to something much hotter than a cup o' joe.

This actually isn't the first time Deadpool and Death have found themselves romantically entangled. During the 1990s, Wade Wilson and Death were briefly involved after Wade went through numerous near-death experiences, which caused considerable tension with Thanos. In Deadpool #64, the Mad Titan -- jealous of Deadpool and Death's romance -- curses the antihero "with life," so as to keep him from being able to steal his love interest. Deadpool and Death's romance has been fairly on and off over years, and this has led to both confrontations and precarious team-ups between Thanos and Deadpool.

Deadpool: The End #1's focus on Death and the Merc with a Mouth's relationship draws on the pair's shared comic book history, giving him an ending fitting to two relationships that have played a big role in his stories. However, the ending also acknowledges the complexities of having to be in a relationship with someone for eternity, indicating that -- even after he's died -- there will still be stories for Deadpool.
