The future of Sony's movie division may be a constant source of Hollywood speculation, but the entertainment giant's animated offerings seem to grow each day. The latest expansion comes as Deadline reports Sony Pictures Animation will team with independent DHX Media to produce a new series based on the hit Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs movies.
Set for a 26-episode commitment, the show will be based on the look of the CGI movies, but will be produced with "traditionally animated" methods, according to the website. There's no word as to whether stars Bill Hader and Anna Faris might reprise their roles.
The move is only the latest bit of expansion for Sony Pictures Animation, which in the past year has recommitted itself to fully animated features. On tap for the near future are a reboot of the Smurfs franchise, Genndy Tartakovsky highly anticipated Popeye, and Medusa, the first feature from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic creator Lauren Faust.
The studio has also explored a number of partnerships with outside production houses like DHX, such as direct-to-DVD animated specials based on its properties. However, the new Cloudy series will be the first animated TV show produced by Sony since the cancellation in of The Spectacular Spider-Man.
