Sony Pictures has marked Sept. 3 as the release date for its untitled Resident Evil reboot.

This new Resident Evil film will serve as an origin story for the popular video game franchise, which takes place on a fateful night in Raccoon City in 1998. The previous six Resident Evil movies have generated a total worldwide theatrical box office of $1.2 billion.

The star-studded cast of the Resident Evil reboot was announced in October 2020. The cast includes Maze Runner's Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy and Neal McDonough (Yellowstone) as William Birkin. Writer-director Johannes Roberts will helm the project, produced by Robert Kulzer, James Harris and Hartley Gorenstein. Executive Producers are Martin Moszkowicz and Victor Hadida.

"With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today's audiences," Roberts said when the cast was announced.

"After a dozen games, six live-action movies and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Raccoon City," Kulzer added.

There are several Resident Evil projects currently in different stages of development. Netflix has dual Resident Evil streaming series in the works, with a live-action series spanning two different timelines, and an anime adaptation titled Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness.

Written and directed by Johannes Robert, Resident Evil stars Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine and Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield. The film also includes Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia, Neal McDonough, Donal Logue, Chris Rook and Lily Gao. Released by Constantin Films, the movie arrives in theaters Sept. 3.
