Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions have tapped Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to develop a live-action series based on the Twisted Metal video game franchise.

"Twisted Metal is one of the most beloved franchises from PlayStation," PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbashm said. "We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans." Joining Reese and Wernick is Michael Jonathan Smith, who'll executive produce and pen the series. Other EPs include Qizilbashm, Will Arnett, Marc Forman, Peter Principato, Carter Swan and Hermen Hulst.

"We love Twisted Metal in all its twisted insanity," Sony Pictures Television Executive Vice President of Comedy Development added. "Michael Jonathan Smith hit it out of the park with an action-packed, brilliantly funny adaptation and we are grateful for the support of Rhett, Paul, Will and our friends at PlayStation."

Debuting in 1995, Twisted Metal is a series of vehicular combat video games that's had eight main installments and two spinoffs. Outside of video games, the franchise has found life in a comic from DC and it was at one point destined for the big screen. However, director Brian Taylor confirmed in 2017 that Sony axed the film plans.

In December 2020, Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra confirmed the company had three movies and seven TV shows based on video games in production, such as the already announced UnchartedThe Last of Us and Metal Gear Solid.
