Sony has announced a partnership with Amazon Prime Video and MGM+ to bring a slate of live-action series based around the Spider-Man comics from Marvel.

The multiple series will center around the Sony Pictures universe of Spider-Man characters, which includes over 900 characters. Sony's new deal will begin with Silk: Spider Society, revolving around a Korean-American woman named Cindy Moon who gets bitten by the same spider as Peter Parker. Her adventure follows her as she escapes imprisonment and searches for her family, all while learning how to handle her new abilities as she becomes the hero known as Silk.

As part of a recent multi-series deal, Angela Kang will serve as showrunner. Kang developed Silk: Spider Society alongside Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal, all of which executive produce the new series. "Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Sony's recent live-action and animated reimagining of the Spider-Man franchise has represented some of the most dynamic superhero storytelling in film," said Jennifer Salke, who heads Amazon Studios. "Together with Angela Kang's creative vision, we couldn't be more pleased to bring Silk: Spider Society to our MGM+ and Prime Video customers."

Sony's New Live-Action Spider-Verse

Rumors about Sony's Spider-Verse deal with Prime Video began in 2020, with a report that indicated the companies were in conversation for a potential multi-series deal. At the time, the deal received comparisons to Marvel's former partnership with Netflix for Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and The Defenders. Initially, the report indicated that Lauren Moon would serve as lead writer, while Lord, Miller and Pascal appeared attached from the start. Later, former The Walking Dead writer Sang Kyu Kim joined the team as the new head writer.

It remains unclear whether this might mean that other Spider-Verse characters that appeared in the MCU as part of Sony's deal with Marvel Studios might also make an appearance -- Tom Holland's Spider-Man chief among them. Holland previously spoke up about seeing more diverse characters from the Spider-Man comics appear in the MCU, naming Silk as one of the heroes he'd most like to see in a live-action adaptation. "I'd like to see Miles, I'd like to see Silk," Holland said. "I think you could do a really cool Jackpot movie."

Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos created Cindy Moon, aka Silk. She made her first appearance in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man #4 as a classmate of Peter Parker's who gets bitten by the same radioactive spider. Unlike Peter, she does not get the immediate chance to use her powers for good; instead, she's locked up in a bunker by her former mentor, Ezekiel Sims.

Sony has not indicated what other characters might appear in its other series. Silk: Spider Society does not yet have a projected release window.
