Sony Discontinues PSP Digital Comic Service

While nothing beats picking up and reading your comics, it's great to have digital copies available for on-the-go use without the worry of removing them from bags or ruining pages. However, if you've been using your Sony PSP to read them, we've got some bad news for you.

Sony has released its latest -- and final -- digital comics store update for the Sony PSP, shuttering its online shop with just over 4,000 comics available to choose from. No reason was given for the closure, but the pending arrival of Sony's next-generation handheld system, the PS Vita, could certainly be a factor in the decision.

"This week will be the final update for digital comics on the PSP," said Gracie Chen, director of the PlayStation Store, through the site's official blog. "The Digital Comics Team will continue to work on bringing the comic service to other Sony devices. We'll make sure to keep you updated with any future developments right here on the PlayStation Blog."

Even though the live service is coming to a close, the update does bring over 50 additional comic book selections to choose from for the remainder of the week, including Batman and Doctor Who titles as well as a preview of IDW Publishing's new "True Blood" series.
