Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 5, will hit stores just in time for the 2020 holiday season.

The news came via the PlayStation Blog and was the first official confirmation that the name of the system would indeed be the PlayStation 5, continuing the console's numbered trend. No specific release date was announced.

"Today I'm proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we'll be launching in time for Holiday 2020," President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan wrote.

Sony also announced a new controller that will ship with the system, replacing its current "rumble" technology with haptic feedback. While "rumble" produced the same vibrations for everything from a car crash to a football tackle, haptic technology will make those incidents feel distinct and unique.

The controller will also incorporate adaptive triggers into the L2/R2 buttons. This feature will allow developers to program the resistance of the triggers so the sensations of the game are felt by the player when they touch a controller. According to the post, players will "feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain."

This will be the fifth video game system from Sony. The PlayStation 4 was released in 2013, while new models -- PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro -- hit stores in September and November 2016, respectively.
