Though the beginning of the summer blockbuster movie season clearly belongs to Marvel's "The Avengers," Sony has plans to make an impact of its own this July with the forthcoming Marc Webb-directed Spidey reboot, "The Amazing Spider-Man." Ratcheting up its marketing campaign this week, in addition to the latest trailer, Sony has released a downloadable app for iOS devices that lets users interact with the web-slinger in a number of ways.

"The Amazing Spider-Man AR" app uses "augmented reality" to bring Spider-Man to life, allowing you to locate and scan special movie-themed AR images with your device's built-in camera, which in turn brings an animated 3D Spider-Man character to life. The more items you locate and scan, the more animations you unlock depicting Spidey crawling up walls, shooting webs across the screen and engaging with villains, including the Lizard.

In addition to a variety of animations, "The Amazing Spider-Man AR" features special Achievements that can be unlocked, 13 in all. The game is also integrated with social media sites, allowing users to share Spider-Man photos on Facebook and Twitter.

"The Amazing Spider-Man AR" is available for download on the App Store, and is free of charge.
