Sony Animation has unveiled plans for a new "Ghostbusters" animated series titled "Ghostbuster: Ecto Force." Set in the year 2050, the series will follow an entirely new generation of 'busters.

According to Variety, original "Ghostbusters" director Ivan Reitman is overseeing the project, which is set to debut sometime in early 2018. This marks the first "Ghostbusters" animated series after a nearly 20-year hiatus from the small screen.

Previous "Ghostbusters" spinoffs include DIC's popular '80s "Real Ghostbusters" animated series and 1997's "Extreme Ghostbusters," similarly about a new generation of Ghostbusters, led by original 'buster Egon Spengler.

Before the animated series hits, you can check out the upcoming "Ghostbusters" reboot, directed by Paul Feig ("Spy") and starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, when it spooks theaters on July 15.
