For all those of you who have wondered, “When will John Cena, Triple H, The Undertaker and other WWE Superstars become animated penguins?” — today is your lucky day.
In a joint announcement from Sony Pictures Animation and WWE Studios, “Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania” is currently in development for a straight-to-home format release in 2017, 10 years after the original “Surf’s Up” — a well-received animated feature starring Shia LaBeouf as the voice of surfing penguin Cody Maverick. How do you top that premise? With surfing penguin analogues of pro wrestling personalities, naturally.
Here’s the logline: “Cody Maverick, hungry for a new challenge, convinces an infamous big wave riding crew known as The Hang 5, voiced by WWE Superstars John Cena®, The Undertaker®, Triple H®, WWE Diva Paige™ and Mr. McMahon®, to let him join them on their journey to a mysterious surf spot known as The Trenches, where legend has it, they’ll find the biggest waves in the world. Cody soon discovers that the life he left behind might be more heroic than what any death-defying wave has to offer.”
As you can see in the above imagery, the animated versions of John Cena, Triple H, Undertaker, Paige and Vince McMahon are fairly literal translations of what all of those people would look like if they were cartoon surfing penguins (and yes, we’re all hoping to see Penguin Undertaker deliver a Tombstone Piledriver to one of his surfing penguin rivals). The film will be directed by Henry Yu, who has worked extensively with noted animator Genndy Tartakovsky, with a screenplay by Abdul Williams. There’s no word yet on if LaBeouf — who, of course, in the years since “Surf’s Up” has taken a career path fairly far from voicing cartoon surfing penguins — will return, or anyone from the original cast.
This isn’t the first time animated versions of WWE stars have crossed over with known properties. 2014 saw “Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery,” and a year later brought “The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age SmackDown!” In each one, like “Surf’s Up,” the WWE performers voiced the characters based on their personas.
