Insomniac Games, previously known for Ratchet and Clank, shot up in popularity last year thanks to the release of the PS4 exclusive video game, Marvel's Spider-Man, which stunned fans with an immersive superhero experience that remained true to the character and faithful to the comics.
Now, after 20 years of collaboration, Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studio is acquiring Insomniac Games. The announcement was made on Monday, though the financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. Insomniac Games founder and CEO Ted Price stated, "joining the WWS family gives Insomniac even greater opportunities to achieve our studio vision of making positive and lasting impressions on people’s lives," adding, "we've enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception."
Price will continue to manage Insomniac after the acquisition. In describing Sony's newest studio, Shawn Layden, chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios said that Insomniac Games' "legacy of best-in class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled." The chairman went on to explain that the acquisition "reiterates our commitment to developing world-class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform."
Marvel's Spider-Man received widespread praise from both critics and regular gamers. As of July 2019, the game has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. Three DLC expansions have since been released, seemingly setting up a sequel. That sequel has not yet been announced.
