UPDATE March 25 at 5:00 p.m. PT: BOOM! Studios has provided official solicitation text and a release date for the series.
“Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter is on the highway to hell — or, at least, the protagonist of his new comic series is. Sutter will work with writer Caitlin Kittredge and artist Jesus Hervas on “Lucas Stand,” his new supernatural fantasy comic series at BOOM! Studios set for release this June.
The six-issue minseries will follow the titular Lucas Stand, who Sutter described to USA Today as “the darkest antihero or hero I’ve ever created.” A former special-ops soldier, Stand encounters a dark angel named Gadriel after he commits suicide; shortly thereafter, Gadriel makes a deal with Stand in order to enlist him for the war between heaven and hell: for every soul he saves, one of his sins is redeemed.
“Over the course of mankind, mortals who were technically not evil people and weren’t supposed to land in hell have been corrupted so much by the way we’ve learned to live,” Sutter explained. “The temptations and the greed and the opulence of our lifestyles have turned the people who were supposed to be on a more altruistic path to the dark side.”
Sutter originally intended for the series to be on television, though he said he enjoys the freedom the comic book medium allows him. “There’s all these crazy demons and amazing implements of death, and [I’m] able to run with it without worrying about ‘How the [expletive] are we going to do this?'”

Synopsis: Ever since we first saw “Sons of Anarchy,” we knew creator Kurt Sutter had an amazing comic book story in him. Now we’ve got it in Lucas Stand, his first, original comic book series. If you’ve been looking for a new antihero like Jax Teller to root for, Lucas Stand fits the bill.
Lucas Stand is a military vet who can’t reintegrate into society and has emotionally cut himself off from the people he loves. At his lowest, Lucas does something he can’t take back. Hell comes calling, offering him the opportunity to make things right. Demons escaping Hell are upsetting the balance of evil, and now Lucifer has recruited Lucas to send them back. It doesn’t matter in what era the demons escape-World War II, old-timey Hollywood, Vietnam, present day-he must learn to fit in both the past and the present. Given new purpose, Lucas starts to rebuild himself and his life, even as he struggles at the human cost that comes with it.
