It's been a bit since the last solid update on AMC's "The Walking Dead" spinoff, but The Hollywood Reporter has word that "Sons of Anarchy" veteran Dave Erickson has joined the project as a co-writer and executive producer.

Erickson has served as both a co-executive producer and writer on multiple "Sons of Anarchy" episodes, and also worked on Fox's "Canterbury's Law" and recent AMC series "Low Winter Sun," which was canceled in December after one season. The news comes in the midst of AMC's 2014 upfront presentation, held on Wednesday.

A "Walking Dead" companion series was first announced last September, with TV show EPs Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert all on board as executive producers, along with franchise creator Robert Kirkman. Little has been revealed thus far about the show, other than it's set in the world of AMC's current massive hit, while containing an "entirely new story and cast of characters." In January, AMC president Charlie Collier was quoted as saying the project was "in the incubation stages."

"After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of 'The Walking Dead' universe," Kirkman said in the original announcement. "The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."
