Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will make a nod to the classic video game, Sonic Adventures 2.
Photos from the set of the video game film adaptation showcase a helicopter that resembles the one from the cutscene from Sonic Adventures 2 in which the titular hedgehog jumps out of the vehicle and rides its flap across the city. The top of the helicopter reads "SA-2," the same initials as Sigma-Alpha 2, the helicopter from the video game.
Released in 2001, Sonic Adventures 2 followed Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as they struggle to save the world from the trio of villains Shadow, Doctor Eggman and Rouge. It received positive reviews and sold over 1.44 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games on the Nintendo GameCube.
While there have been no reports of Shadow appearing in the upcoming movie, Knuckles and Tails are expected to play a role in the film. The latter appeared in mid-credits sequence of the first film, while the former has been rumored to appear in the sequel since late 2020. Currently, Aquaman star Jason Momoa's name has been thrown around as the voice of Knuckles, although nothing has been confirmed.
Released in February 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog follows the Blue Blur (voiced by Schwartz) as he fights to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from taking over the world. The movie opened to $70 million over the four-day President's Day weekend, earning the largest opening for a video game-based film. It ended up bringing in a total of $319.7 million worldwide off an $85 million budget.
Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy announced that they were developing a sequel to the hit film adaptation of the popular video game franchise back in May 2020. Jeff Fowler is returning to direct and Pat Casey and Josh Miller will once again write the script.
The first Sonic game, Sonic the Hedgehog, was released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis to compete with Nintendo's Mario. The franchise started out as a series of platformers, but eventually spun out into racing, fighting, party and sports games. The Sonic characters even crossed over with Mario in the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games franchise, while Sonic appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros.
Written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is directed by Jeff Fowler. The film will hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
