When the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog premiered last year, Paramount Pictures captured the internet’s attention in the worst way possible. Sonic’s initial design received the majority of criticism from those who found the character's overly humanoid appearance to be creepy. And then there was the out-of-place use of Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise."

The studio pulled the original trailer after it had received more than 20 million views, and hundreds of thousands of dislikes, on YouTube. In response to the criticism, director Jeff Fowler announced on Twitter that Sonic would be redesigned in order to look more like his video game counterpart. The second trailer featuring the redesigned Sonic was revealed on Nov. 12, and garnered a far more favorable response, with both fans and critics praising Sonic’s new design.

Animator Max Schneider revealed in an interview that redesigning Sonic was a process that took five months, and was achieved without much stress or working overtime. Tyson Hesse, known for his artwork throughout the Sonic franchise, led the redesign for the character. Sonic was given larger and differently colored eyes, new running sneakers that were inspired by the games and white gloves. Sonic was also given a less humanoid appearance, more in line with his game counterpart. The redesign was a hit, and the second trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog received the highest like-to-dislike ratio of any trailer on Google in the past three years.

According to earlier reports, Paramount spent $35 million redesigning Sonic for the entire film. It was estimated the studio spent $2.15 million improving Sonic’s design for the second trailer alone. Yet, Indiewire reported, Sonic’s redesign cost only about $5 million. According to an unnamed insider, most of the visual effects weren't complete by the time the first trailer dropped, which apparently saved Paramount a lot of time and money when it came to fixing the design. While a viral tweet claimed Sonic's total budget ballooned from $90 million to $125 million, the film’s actual production costs are estimated at just $95 million.

Despite the initial negative response, Sonic the Hedgehog will likely be a box office success for Paramount. Opening this weekend alongside Fantasy Island and The Photograph, the movie is predicted to have a strong domestic debut, earning about $40 million over President’s Day.
