Understandably, Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler was nervous about the reaction to the titular speedster's redesign after receiving massive backlash over the original.

"I think it had been about five months that had passed since the first trailer. We had worked very hard on our updates to the character," Fowler told Digital Spy. "It was definitely a little bit of like, 'Oh man, what happens if they don't like this?'" He also mentioned everyone working on the film was happy with the resign and believed fans would respond positively.

Luckily for Fowler, the new Sonic received mostly positive reviews. "Fortunately, any anxiety I had the night before passed really quickly once it was released," he continued. "Because, yeah, it was such an incredible feeling to see Sonic 2.0 get embraced the way it was."

Sonic the Hedgehog will release several months after its originally intended release date thanks to the redesign. However, while the redesign was initially estimated to cost $35 million, more recent reports have said that it actually cost closer to $5 million.
