SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog is heading back to television sets and mobile devices in a new 3D animated series for Netflix.

A tweet from an official Netflix Twitter account reads, "Rings? Check. Sneakers? Check. Speed? SONIC. SEGA’s legendary video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from @SEGA, @WildBrainHQ and @ManOfActionEnt premiering in 2022." WildBrain and Man of Action are collaborating with SEGA to develop a new take on the popular video game character.

Sonic the Hedgehog has starred in numerous video games, animated series and comic books. The franchise stars Sonic and his cast of friends as they fight to stop the evil Eggman. Throughout the video games, Sonic would gather golden rings and try to complete each level at an accelerated pace.

A live-action hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie debuted in February of this year, with Ben Schwartz (Parks and RecreationDuckTales) voicing the titular character.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, with James Marsden, Neal McDonald, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell. The film is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD.
