Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is less than a month away from release. While audiences wait, a new trailer has been released to tide them over.

Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and Doctor Robotnik appear in the trailer, caught in an epic struggle for the Chaos Emerald and the power that it possesses.

Prior to the trailer, a teaser and exciting new poster for Sonic were released, both readying audiences for the fast-paced sequences they are in for. In fact, the poster promoted the 4DX experience. Developed by CJ 4DPLEX, the 4DX format creates a multisensory experience using motion, vibration, water, wind, scents and more to allow audiences to feel the action they are watching.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will see several stars from the 2020 film return. Actor Ben Schwartz returns as the titular hedgehog, while legendary actor and comedian Jim Carrey will once again don the evil and significantly larger moustache of Doctor Robotnik. Star James Marsden will return to play Tom Wachowski. As for the new critters, Colleen O'Shaughnessey will play Tails, while Idris Elba lends his voice to Knuckles the echidna.

Beyond all the exciting moments teased in the most recent trailer, there aren't a lot of details available for fans to sift through. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 director Jeff Fowler previously assured fans that they can expect a lot of video game Easter eggs. Upon the release of the film's first trailer, Fowler said, "[There were] all kinds of [Easter eggs]," teased Fowler. "One of them was in the trailer, of course, the biplane. It's such an iconic visual from [the Sonic 2 game]."

The first Sonic film, though hit with backlash upon the release of its first trailer, ultimately went on to become a notable success when it released in February 2020. The film grossed $319.7 million worldwide on a budget of approximately $85–90 million and was met with mostly positive reception. The success has resulted in not just a sequel, but several further projects.

Paramount is currently has already announced the development of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, as well as a Paramount+ spinoff series revolving around Knuckles, with Elba returning. Upon the announcement of these projects, Brian Robbins, Paramount Pictures & Nickelodeon President and CEO, stated, "For more than three decades, Sonic the Hedgehog's universe of vibrant, unique characters has generated one of the most passionate fanbases." He added, "We look forward to continuing our collaboration with SEGA, Neal Moritz, and all our creative partners as we explore additive ways to holistically scale the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise across platforms and captivate its loyal audience around the world."
